*UPDATE* Read my 2nd post in this thread*

I have an Onkyo TX-SR600 (5.1) receiver (bought brand new in Nov'02) connected to my tv (for HDTV/Dolby via digital COAX) and my DVD player (TOSlink).

On either of them, the Dolby indicator is on, but the sound either doesn't work at all, or it's missing the channel that voices come out of (we can hear the background sounds perfectly). Tested via multiple DVDs and HDTV channels using Dolby.

When not using Dolby, I have it on "all channels stereo" which enables all 5 speakers and the sound is fine so this indicates it's not a speaker connection issue.

This used to be intermittent on the tv connection, but never the DVD player.. now both are currently not working. I also have the XBOX on a different TOSlink and will test that soon.

Any ideas ? Would this be considered one of the common problems when receivers go bad ?

i would recommend trying different cables too - not sure if you've already tried that.

after that, it could be anything, but most likely something burnt out on the board. you might see if it's under warranty (unlikely) and/or take it to an authorized repair shop. might be something they can easily fix.

sounds to me like you should be shopping for a new receiver though...sucks.

SORRY I'M AN IDIOT. Shoulda tested every channel individually. My CENTER channel cables didn't have good contact... I wiggled it a bit and they're good now. Dolby voices come out of the center channel only.. good to know. 😉 Everything is good again.

Happened to me before.....congratulations.

Been there -

because all the effects are coming through so clear on the other channels, I actually watched the first 15 minutes of Hannibal, with no dialogue... Actors were talking, but no sounds from center channel. Lots was happening in slo-mo/flashbacks, so I thought it was some weird arty effect...
