Yeah, I was thinking mold.

Asbestos, lead, and radon usually give problems after long term exposure.

Mold remediation is pretty intensive usually involving removing sheetrock, carpeting, ceiling tiles, etc.

I don't know if I'd want to live in a house while it was stripped down to the studs.

My old apartment had bad airflow in the bathroom (slow exhaust fan and no windows). There was black mold in the ceiling corners and on the ceiling. After I moved, I had heard that the apartment had not been rented for over 6 months. It was rumored that the walls had to be ripped out.

My sickness from that apartment included: chronic bronchitis and lethargy. Again, I suggest fire.

When we moved into this house, which is pretty old, we felt tired all the time. We thought it was just becuase of the moving process, but even two weeks later, the house just seems to suck our energy out.

This previous weekend, I went to CT while one of my roommates traveled to another part of VA. We both returned Monday night, felt fine on Tuesday, but we were both sick today (Wednesday) and my other roommate who was here the whole weekend said he doesn't feel too good either.

So.. we're thinking it has something to do with the house.. I'm pretty sure it's not carbon monoxide because we have two detectors in the house that we test regularly.. the only thing I can think of is lead so I think I might make some calls tomorrow to find out what the lead levels are in the house and in the water.

Is there anything else we should be checking for?

Edit- by sick I mean cold/fever like symptoms.

radon gas accumulating below the house? (don't laugh, it's a real problem in some dwellings)

mould/ fungus

bed bugs (they are making a comeback, they emerge in the night to suck your blood and you could have an allergic reaction to their bites)

outgassing of toxic chemicals from the materials used in the house?

um, pesticides sprayed inside the house?

Is this like when they say it must be in the water ?

Update: a guy came by to clean out the basement. I haven't been down there to see how it is since he finished before I got home from work and locked it up, but he was here for at least two hours cleaning it.
I also did buy one of these and hooked it up today in my room. I can't tell much yet, but it sure did neutralize the smell upstairs really quick!

sprtizing bleach on black mold will not be enough, it will require professional mold remediation.

move. now.

it is NOT asbestos. you only get that after like 20 years exposure, not a few weeks. but mold is highly probable. another example might be Legionella pneumophila which causes legionaires disease as well as pontiac fever. It is commonly found in A/C units.
