If anyone cares, i just started blogging what i'm doing with home automation on my PC at http://homeautomation.wordpress.com/ .
I'm looking to extend my HTPC to do the following:
- HVAC (done, then I broke it)
- Irrigation (done)
- Theft (i.e., motion/glassbreak/window/door sensors, so I can rip out ADT)
- Security (fire/smoke/heat/CO/flood)
- CCTV (camera @front door)
- telephone/doorbell detection, so i can pause a/v & popup a camera @front door on ring. (we get massive amounts of salespeople & Jehovah's witnesses. 3 today...)
- lighting
Plus there's the obvious stuff if all this is done on the one system (i.e., SMS your house when you're getting closer so it'll turn up heat/lightsetc)
