My Home Network

Well I got started on it and should get the wire run to the garage tomorrow. I am having a slight issue with the wireless node, but that is a sygate thing that I need to figure out. So my SetiQ should be ready to drop a BIG FAT DUMP Sunday! WHOOHOO!!!!!

For those interested....I am running Sygates personal firewall on my PC. I don't have broadband but like to control what app can access the net and which ones can't. Well when I set up my wireless node (full 11mbps by the way, was very surprised at that) I was unable to see the other computer on the LAN, so just out of curiousity I turned OFF the firewall and I was able to access the system. So I turned the firewall back on and was still able to until I rebooted my system this morning and lost the other system. So there is something I have set wrong somewhere . So hopefully I will have the kinks worked out and I can get my saved up WU's dumped!

This problem sounds strangely like one I encountered while troubleshooting an unable-to-browse-the-network problem for someone else. First, I'm going to assume that your main PC which is functioning as the gateway has, in addition to the modem, a LAN connection and / or wireless connection as well. Your firewall should have an option to add those internal connections to a local zone (IIRC that's what Zonealarm calls them). The reason why you can't see the other computers over the LAN is probably because the firewall is blocking the traffic that the computers need to send to each other to "see" themselves. If your firewall can't disable its firewalling of internal connections, you might want to consider a software firewall such as Zonealarm or Tiny Personal Firewall (or whatever they call it these days). HTH.
