My computer had worked fine up until I filled the last of 5 pci slots with a Maxtor ATA 100 controller card. I used this card, so I could have all my E-IDE devices on their own channel (my motherboard supports ata 100 also, it is the ASUS A7M266). When I go to shutdown, it closes everything and the screen turns black, but it doesn't turn off. I heard of some WIN ME updates called preliminary shutdown patch for mapped devices or somehting like that. Where can I get this patch or how do I correct my problem?

Do you also have AOL? There is an issue where after using AOL, if you try to shut down the system will hang. Look it up on MS website. If its not AOL, and I hope its not, there are other shutdown Issues with winME that you should look into.

Windows 9x/Me hangs at shutdown because of all sorts of things (I see more 9x machines that won't shutdown that that will). Virus scanners often cause it to hang when shutting down. Different programs in the system tray do the same. My advice is basically to try the MS shutdown patch (it's available on their site if you search for it). If that fixes it great. If not then I guess you could try a BIOS patch but you'll probably just have to live with it, switch to 2k or wait for XP.

Since your system was fine until you added the controller card, could it be that you are getting some resource conflicts (IRQs) that cause the system to hang when you shut down?
