My Head Hurts... (a64 cooler picking)

I'm finally gonna get to building my first a64 rig and I've been racking my brain for prettiy much the whole day trying to decide on a cpu cooler. I've finalized my choice to 4.

If it helps, the mobo and cpu im getting will be the s939 3400+ (that oem only processor that was sold to only a few places like TD and Newegg) and a asus k8v deluxe and i do want to do some mild oc'ing just to get that little bit more oomph.

1. Tt Venus 12
2. Tt Silent Boost
3. Zalman 7000B-AlCu
4. XP-90 with undecided 92mm fan

I've all but practically eliminated the two thermaltakes for my choices, but they're up there because they're hte most easily available ot me at the time. I've heard mixed reviews on both.

The zalman alcu was my original choice but i after already ordering my mobo, i found out that the backplate of it is actually glued on rather than screwed. To fix this one would have to blowdryer the backplate of r aminute or so, and remove it. But i heard this voids the warrantee, and i dont feel comfortable pointing a blowdryer at my mobo.

the xp-90 seems to be the best choice atm, though the most expensive. I've been trying to find the proper fan to go with this, but i can't seem to find one. i want to ge ta fan with manual speed control, so the first i looked into was the A2017 smartcase blue led fan by thermaltake. I've also heard about the 92mm panaflo or vantec tornado.

Well as you can see i'm quite confused, so if a number of you guys can point me in the right direction, it would help me out very much. Noise level is sort of a factor, since my comp is in a small room with a bunch of other computers (basically our library became a computer room) and i dont want to distract my family or have them complain about it. It can be loud, but at least variable. also, if you have any fans you could recommend for hte xp-90, id appreciate that as well ^_^

I have been using the Venus12 for nearly a year now and it is excellent. Several methods of controlling fan speed, quiet on low while still cooling very well, and even easier to install than the stock retail cooler. I used to hate their coolers for sktA but this thing is nothing but great cooling and control with super ez installation for a very good price.

It's really between the XP-90 and Zalman 7000...

If you decide to get the XP I would go with a standard 3 pin fan, rather then a fan with manual control. If you want to control the speed you can use SpeedFan or the Asus software, its a much more elegant solution then manual controls.

Here are some fans I'd recommend.

Panaflow L1A
Panaflow M
Delta

would you recommend the vantec tornado and then control it with speedfan / the asus software? or are those 3 my best options?

also, excalpc just ran out the xp-90 seriously while i was checking out. sw pc is also out of them, do you know a reliable place i can get it from?

newegg.com and svc.com are good bets for retailers.

As for fan control SpeedFan is an excellent utility, I use it on my comp quite effectively. Just make sure it works with your motherboard.

The Tornado's alright but insanely loud, even at lower speeds it will never really be quiet. It's also just a relabeled Sunon, so I'd rather have that way anyways. Panaflow is easy to recommend, they are some of the best fans out there and pretty easy to come by.

SVC and Newegg, SideWinder all are good places to buy from.

I removed the glued-on backplate of my MSI board very easily - no blowdryer stuff like I read in many posts. Just took a plastic spatula with an angled handle; carefully inserted it between the motherboard and backplate and pressed gently - the backplate popped off very easily. I then installed the Zalman 7000-AlCu. It does a great job and is very quiet. It was my first build and the whole process was much easier than I thought. Hope this helps you make a decision.

I had a Venus 12 and it got pretty quiet at the lowest fan speed but I just didn't like it for several reasons. I just ordered a Zalman pure copper and I will see how that turns out.

Silent Boost has done me right...

I haven't tried the other three on your list, but my Tt Silent Boost for my A64 3000+ (max @ 2500, 250x10, 1.6v) and my cpu temps went down from 45°C/56°C (idle/load) with stock AMD HSF and AS5 to 30°C/40°C respectively using actual therm probe. My BIOS diode only reports about ~1°C variance, so I know my readings are pretty spot on. And it's hella quiet too. Not a bad HSF for $30ish...

i decided to to with the xp-90 with a panaflo 92mm m1a fan ^^ thanks guys

A fine choice

I went with this as well, but SVC was OOS on the Panaflo.

I'm going to try the Zalman with the resistor that lets it run at 5.5V. Or just use Speedfan.

yeah, once i finally had my heart set on that set i actually spent close to an hour finding a decent enough site to carry both. i would have tried the zalman as well, but i was pretty much unwilling to pry my backplate off or blowdry it off.

I've seen the best ratings on the zalman alcu, and that its quiet on low but cools well....mind you, it looks to be a b*itch to install....you have to screw it down to your mobo (I dont wanna pull my whole mobo out!
