Just completed my first self-build 😉 everything is going pretty smoothly but... my Maxtor Diamond 10 200gb SATA drive shows up under the icon in the bottom right corner of windows...the one used to remove usb flash drives etc. Thought this was a bit odd as i dont want to remove it!!!

My system is an AMD athlon64 3000, 1gb RAM, nvidia 6600GT, Asus A8N-Sli Deluxe, with windows XP sevice pk2. Any ideas folks???

Thanks

Philip

Hey Crazylegs,

Welcome to the AT forums.

Don't worry about the "Remove Hardware" aspect of your new SATA drive. This is just a quirk of the nVidia I/O driver. Ask anyone who has an nForce3 or nForce4 board, and is using the nvidia driver with their sata drive.

I've heard that this happens as the driver supports sata hot-swap (remove drive and replace while running). You shouldn't attempt this if your drive contains the primary boot partition (i.e. OS) or your system's swap file.

I see the same thing for my Raptor. Using an nVidia nf3 board from Gigabyte.

it's kind of normal OS behaviour since SATA is a hot pluggable drive system. and all hot pluggable hardware shows up in that add-remove dialog.

Mine doesn't show up like that if I don't install the IDE drivers from my motherboard disk. If I do use those drivers it shows up & won't go away unless I uninstall the drivers.

thanx guys...! guess i'll not worry too much about it!!! Pretty sure i did NOT install any IDE drivers though - unless it does them when u install the nForce4 bundled chipset stuff...? What would happen if some1 was to accidentally click the remove feature?? as my Dad will be using the PC !!! 🙂

Thanx again

Go into the Taskbar properties and select Hide Inactive Icons.

Then select Customize.

Then set that icon to Always Hide.

Yeah the IDE drivers install with the chipset drivers from the disk unless you tell it not to.

i did a clean install of win XP+sp2 (slipstreamed), and after installing the nvidia drivers the sata HD still doesn't show up as removable. i like that.
