First of all yes, I'm sure it's my hard drive.

The problem is occuring with one of a pair of IBM 75GXP Deskstar ATA100 30.7 gig 7400 rpm drives. They are striped in a RAID configuration on my Abit KT7-RAID. Every so often one of the drives begins to make a grinding noise. I can make it occur in a couple of ways:

1) Running a very thorough scandisk (running Win2k)
2) Virus Scanning my entire hard drive

I am rather unsure what to do. Got any tips?

It could be a sign that that there are some bad blocks on the drive. It happened on my 45gig 75gxp, the drive started to make a really serious sounded scratching sound and when I reformated to reinstall, there were bad blocks present

I thought that too, since this happened once before and I fixed it by scandisking the drive and finding some bad blocks, however it's not working this time. I even did a complete surface scan in DOS, nada.

The fitness test says I have bad sectors. However now when I run scandisk, it tells me the harddrive is fine. ???!

My brother has the same problem, but it now has started to make a "beeping" sound.. kinda like a screeching sound when it gets to those parts of the disk. I have not sent the drive in yet, because I need a way to save his data.
