My hard drive is going to die soon, isn't it?

I just know it. I have a Maxtor.. i forget the model. One of those 80GB fluid bearing ones... D720X or somesuch.

Anyway... the past couple days, it's sounding more "scratchy" when it operates.. like some other hard drives do. And my backup program also announced:

Scanning incomplete, error -1123 (volume structure corrupt)

That's not too nice to see. What should i do? A simple chkdsk /f ?

Backup as soon as you possibly can! Don't even use your PC for 1 hour without backup anything important now! And I really mean it. If it makes noise & there's been a detected error, it's bad news! Forget about chkdsk & scandisk and that sort of stuff until after you've backed up. 2 months ago, my maxtor hd (a non-fb) started going bad. I made the mistake of running scandisk and stuff like that. It turned out that every minute the HD was powered up it was developing more bad sectors! I lost some data because I was running scandisk instead of backing up.

I already backed up all my important stuff to a 2nd hard drive, so it's cool. I plan to reformat tomorrow, and run powermax to see if the drive is OK.

if it makes noise like old HDD's yes i think it's goin to die...
before you reformat it i suggest you repartition it and then reformat it... i think the magnetic plate thingie ( dunno the name ) is scratched... and since it is a physical damage there's almost nothing you can do about it...

Stand over the hard drive while it is "on"...

Pull out a trumpet or bugle...

Play taps once only...

Remove the hard drive...and while it is still warm to the touch,

RMA it.

It's funny. When I read a subject like that, I can answer "yes" before I even read the thread.

MDesigner, if your hard drive starts making new noises it is generally time to replace it.
