It was a 30.7GB Maxtor DiamondMax VL40 5400RPM drive that I have had for nearly two years. It all happened so suddenly... I heard the clicks, immediately did a scandisk but the scan failed halfway through. I then tried to copy my data to my primary hard disk but only managed to get a few files. The next thing I know, the drive became completely inaccessible. I had to unplug it in order for WinXP to run properly without freezing the system.
I lost mostly my MP3s and downloads, which I can recover since I have a lot backed up on CD-R, but my most recent documents were lost.
This is the second hard drive that has died on me in my entire life, and is also the most severe case that I have experienced. Just to share the experience with you guys, nothing more. Next time, when I have enough cash I'm considering RAID to avoid such mishaps altogether.
