Just noticed that in most games my Gigabyte GTX 670 OC (which has an awesome cooler) actually runs cooler than my overclocked 2500k @4.4ghz! I never, in my 20 years of computing, saw my GPU cooler than my CPU! just goes to show how far the industry has come! The 2500k hits 65c while my GTX 670 hits 61c under load, except for BF3 when it goes to 68-69c. Kudos to Gigabyte's OC line of video cards for having such an efficient cooler and for Nvidia for providing such a cool running GPU!!

Then your GPU is at least 68-69C under load..... There is no "except" in max temps... :p

Furmark for GPU, linpack for CPU. *those* are max temps. Anything else is somewhat less than max. If there is a process that will make your component hotter, obviously, you have yet to measure the max temp.

no im not talking about benches, im sure i can push my GPU to 70c+ in with those i'm sure, im talking about real world use, ie stuff i use 99.9% of the time. In games, which is what i bought the $400 video card for, it never exceeds 65c (with current ambient temps), BF3 being the most demanding game i play. It reaches 65c in that, and my 2500k reaches 67c.:p kinda crazy.

the new Kepler vid cards run cool especially if you got one with dual fans .
My MSI 660ti PE OC runs up to 50c after few hrs of gaming (this depends on the game )

Dual fans on 100 percent must sound like the Shuttle just landed in your backyard lol, :p

Tweakboy you can get dual fan coolers that are quiet.

I suggest looking at Artic cooling aftermarkets coolers for more information.

not when they are running idle@30% and so far only hit 35% or so at 50c (that is latest game I have, BL2) other games the temps are even lower (low 40's)

I can not even hear the vid and my case (550r) has open panels .

I delidded my GTX460 and strapped on an Artic Cooling Accelero XTREME Plus. My OCCT peak temps are a paltry 49°C :) (and that is OC'ed to 865MHz and overvolted to 1.087V)

But seriously if anyone wants to feel good about having their GPU run cooler than their CPU all you have to do is buy an Ivy Bridge CPU and use the stock cooler ;) It'll make your OC'ed 480 cool by comparison :D

Yeah never mind your GPU would burst into flames if you could oc it 1ghz over stock like you did your cpu ...

GPU's actually run far cooler than CPU's in the right conditions, that's why you're stuck dealing with companies charging you for crap aluminum cooling solutions. There's so much headroom they can throw absolutely terrible cooling solutions on their cards and get away with it.

People were stupid enough to blame nVidia last round and as a result instead of giving us the performance advantage a node shrink should offer they did away with the performance advantage and gave us a GPU capable of good temps under terrible cooling solutions.

Makes me sick. NVidia's main goal was to have the fastest single GPU on the market. Now because of the cry babies we've got this incremental baby step crap to look forward to and they're still charging the same price's.

nice just 60s, I remember my overclocked 8800GT was like close to 90C on max load. good to see new GPUs clamp down on temp problem.

did you know they make a hybrid water one now?! imaging you got that on ur 460, would prob bring it down another 10C!

Lol thats true, my 2500k is indeed overclocked quite a bit, but i got a massive Noctua cooler on it & its near silent (using the fans in silent mode). But still, i never had my GPU cooler than my gpu under load except wkth this gen. I only upgrade my GPU once every 3 years (hence justifying the $400), so really impressed with the performance & temp of the GTX 670 compared to my previous Radeon 5870.:) Also its a gigabyte OC windforce version, so the cooler is'nt stock. Wonder how cool the video cards will be 3 years from now?

Just one thing, they DID give us a performance advantage in relation to the demands of the market. A GTX 670 manhandles any game thats out now without breaking a sweat (@ 1920x1200 & under resolution, & according to Steam survey 98.5% of users are using that resolution or less). So why would they focus on making a super uber graphics thats loud instead of an uber graphics card thats silent? The former would've been a waste & ignoring the market completely.

The gigabyte windforce OC cooler is virtually silent, i never hear it even over my noctua, so no need for anything on that. Its a solid graphics card indeed!

If I wanted a cool and quiet card I'd just look to the value section where they've always been. Now we're potentially stuck with 190-200 watt parts as the top end from nvidia. I don't see that as a positive.

If you want cool and quiet without sacrificing performance then you just get water cooling. Water is the no compromise solution, just takes money.

It was expensive for me as well, even though I went the cheap route with a Rasa kit as my base... I spent less cooling my CPU and both gpus as some will pay just for a closed CPU loop. EK is expensive stuff!

Have fun replacing the whole system when u get a leak or diagnosing corroded water blocks. I hate water cooling almost as much as I hate big fat sloppy programers.

I've never had any uncontrolled leaks, 1/2 OD barb, 7/16 ID tubing is extremely hard to mess up.

Distilled + Silver = no corrosion

I also do sub 0C water with the PC inside, if you know what you're doing dealing with things like leaks and condensation aren't any harder than dealing with dust build up.

You can also get non conductive water coolant, but I never saw the need for it personally.

How many times has that happened to you? And how many "big fat sloppy programers" do you know?

Some smug ass informed me I know of one to many, and for the record water + metal = rust, any knucklehead can tell you that. For people like you and me who aren't wealthy, money doesn't take care of the fact that some would never run water through an electrically charged system. My pitt has habbit of knocking stuff over in my house, my computer being one of them. Water would likely just complicate things.

Definitely sounds like you got issues then, if I were in your position I'd steer clear as well. Thankfully I'm not, so I don't have to worry about it.

I hope for your sake you avoid taking transportation in any water-cooled vehicles, they have the same corrosion risks as well as the same risks of being knocked over by another vehicle and have a habit of making a big mess of things.

As others have pointed out, corrosion inhibitors and closed-loop designs are all well understood. Whether it is your refrigerator, your car, your heatpump/AC, your washing machine, your dishwasher, or your water-cooled computer.

No reason to be fearful of something that is already all around you, including programmers ;)
