guys, i know this has been askedbefore, but no one has been able to give me a good answer besides buy a home theater system, which is comptly out of the question. allot of us own motherboards that have s/pdif, but we are forced to use crappy realtek dacs. where are the pc speakers or even headphones that support s/pdif, so our soundstorm can shine?

Well, if you're into composing music, you could buy some nice studio monitor speakers, but be prepared to shell out A LOT for em (relatively speaking)

You could try a klipch promedia DD-5.1. It is a decoder that acepts sp-dif, coax and toslink and will output 2.4.or 5 channels depending on source material. It has a MSRP of $99

S/PDIF is pretty much a top-of-the-line option, so you wouldn't really make sense to include this input on cheap speakers. The Logitech z680's ($275 @ newegg) are awesome for gaming and listening to music and have S/PDIF, coax, and analog inputs.

Speakers don't "do" S/PDIF, though a speaker set may include an external DAC.

If you really want quality, buy a good external DAC ($300 or so for a two channel, you'll need something with DD/DTS support), a 5 channel amp, and good HT speakers.

If you can't afford that, buy a receiver (DAC + AMP) and some decent HT speakers.

However you look at it, PC speakers are a joke.

You may be surprised just how far $300 can get you in regards to home theater. 2 years ago I bought a set of refurbed Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble IV speakers for $112 shipped from hifi.com (off ebay). I recently bought a new Denon AVR-1604 receiver for $168 shipped.
