My Graphics Card has issues......Any ideas which part of its Central Nervous System is naffed?

Few months ago I burnt out my processor & motherboard over a power surge. My PSU went in turn managing to damage a part of my mobo, causing it to overheat in seconds and begin to smoke and die. Luckily, my ex cards didnt go with it... So i got myself i good ole fashioned BX Chipset MSI mobo, p2 450, n 384mb of memory. Few month ago i changed my graphics cards around, and put the Geforce2 GTS in downstairs machine, and GeForce 256 Pro in my machine upstairs. Fan went on my Geforce 256 and i didn think much of it at time. For ages and ages, after playing things from max payne all the way through and completing it three times, medal of honour, completing that 2 times, and other GPU Straining games repeatedly, i hadnt had a problem. I pressumed that the card would not be a problem with no fan. Was I wrong? Well like i said it was a few month ago now when i got hold of GTA3. Before summer infact. I started to play this constantly. After going out one evening and returning, I find lines all up and down my screen 🙁 :'( Wherever there is a dark patch or black box on one section of screen, it makes a line across rest of screen. I checked monitor and it isnt this, and ive looked at graphics card and it doesnt 'look' damaged. The only thing that worries me is that the graphics card CANNOT be touched without burning through your hand :| I pressed my finger on it a few weeks ago to see how hot it got. I couldnt keep it on there for more than a split second. You can feel the heat pump out of it. Well anyway any ideas whether it is graphics card? North Bridge or sumthing? ANy other possibilitys? Its not processor either i changed that to a 500mhz p3 very recently. I would appreciate input 😛

definitely sounds like overheating could be causing the artifacts you're talking about. do these lines occur all the time, or only after playing a graphically intensive game such as gta3?

heres what you might want to do:

-clean all of the dust off the fan of your video card, so it runs faster with less air being blocked
-try running with the side of your case taken off, or with a fan pointed directly at the video card, to see if that fixes the problem
-if you're feeling adventurous, you can try to replace the fan with something better, but thats quite intensive, and if you dont know what you're doing, you can break stuff.

btw, welcome to the forums!

edit: wait, does the card youre running right now not have a fan? does it have anything on the chip, at least a heatsink?

Sounds like the graphics card is a little warm. Get a fan blowing on it and make sure your case is well ventilated also with good air flow.

Aye thanks for the welcome ! I been looking for a lil while my mate told me bout anandtech. Yer my card has a heatsink + fan. Nvidia will not gimme a fan even though its not past warrenty 😡 unless i pay for it. Fan is completly bust and i think one of the chips has burnt out or sumthing. Because i mean there are lines all over place. Graphics card is untouchable and like i said you can feel the heat coming off of it

I dont want cooling 🙁 Could sum1 with experience in computer components right down to the silicon side of things tell me what wud be the cause of lines etc? Even someone from anandtech! Pleeeeease.

Cooling is not a problem atm i want to know if its ounds like the chip on the graphics card gone, or the mainboard. Or is it sumthing else?

yes , it sounds like you were wrong , got a cooler on the card now ? have you tryed the other sugestions here yet ? the problems you describe sound like a video card that is\was TOO HOT. can you try the card in another comp ? try another card in yours? if coolings not the problem then why say "Graphics card is untouchable and like i said you can feel the heat coming off of it "?

The thing is even if the computer has been off for a while the second i switch the thing back on it comes back up with these lines on the screen. Before theres even any heat whatsoever. It just seems more like there is something wrong with the Chip that is permanently wrong, not temporary and undoable.

Im not sure though. I havnt checked the graphics card on another motherboard yet, but i have checked another monitor on my graphics card in my current machine atm.

Still anymore ideas?

Yea theres obviously a problem with cooling, Im sure thats whats made the problem in the first place, but can it be undone by cooling it sufficiently? Or does it sound like it is well and truly buggered? Is a fan on top of it between AGP and PCI enough to cool it?

you realy need to try either a different vid card or try your card in another comp. but i do think your card is fried.
good luck
