Prenote: There was no noobs forum...So i figured this was it for my question :)

Ok, i'm planning on buying a new computer in the next two weeks. Probably off a custom site unless newegg is sigficantly cheaper (looking at ibuypower, polywell, cyberpowerpc, and puget).

Currently i'm, erm, not far at all even with being at in for a month.

Proccesor: Undecided...Looking more into AMD X2s for best model...Unfortnetly last amd article on AMD here seems outdated.

Motherboard: See above

Ram: Looking at 1-2gig of corsair no heatspreader.

Graphics card: Trying to decide (Finally! About a paragraph in: The dillema) between Nvidia or ATI in the 200-300 dollar range. I'm looking at the 7900 GS (the one that came out on 9/14) and a comparable ATI, but i'm not sure what's comparable.

My spending should be around 2k with $500 dollars reserved for alter upgrades (so it can go a little over 2k if need be)

I'm thinking, according to benchmark tests on another hardware site the X1900XTX ATI is the closest equivelent? any confirmation?

x1900xtx blows away the 7900GT and the 7900GS, I don't where you are getting your benches but theyre wrong.

If you are looking for a comparable ATi brand card to the 7900GS, I would say x1800xt 256mb(no longer in production).

FYI you can get a 7900GS in a Dell XPS 410 with core 2 processor so include it in your price comparisons. The E6400 is faster than an X2 5000+ and is only an extra $50 over the E6300 at Dell.

Last articly on AMD was them getting OWNED by Intel's C2D. X1900 rocks hard, if you're on a budget, go for the X1800, I have one and it's excellent.

Wow ... they have a pretty good deal going for a 410. Came out to roughly what I have planned for a build.

Saku, It was the other graphics card in a benchmark test for the 7900gs i'm trying to look for the equivelent in PRICE to see which is better.... I think like your other suggestion. However, i'm looking price equivelent moreso.

DaveSimmons

-Not looking at dells or apple. Dont want to get into that sorry.

StevenNevets,
---Ahh....Yes, i think, thanks, it's 40 dollars less right, but i'll need to find out performance compared to 7900GS.

OSX,
--Well, I'm not getting the top line anyway. Besides the point i'm loyal to AMD for their past performance. I'm not sold over in a second. I'm a smuck who tries and be 'cool' with the amd peeps. Basically, i trust amd more. + i have stocks in Amd...X-D. I'm really interested i a 200-300 dollar range card, but the only one i'm aware of is the 7900 GS (280 dollars) and i'm looking for the equivelent ATI to see if it's better. Equivelent in price.

hmorphone,
Thanks. Its better then 7900 GS then...?but 40 dollars cheaper?! (rings purdy bell to me...No wonder people have been shouting ATI to me..But i'm still trying to clarify- Nvidia seems more used though)

Not by gamers. That X1900XT is way faster than a 7900GS. IIRC, it's faster than the 7900GT, though not by nearly as much.

Ooh, and my price was messed up. GS = 10 dollars less then X1900XT and GT = 40 dollars more. So, erm, although its been quite pointed out can someone else show me X1900XT being better just to bash it in? Its appreciated, maybe i'll grasp it =)

And should i get 256 or 512? Decent performance difference? i assume it comes in the two varieties.

If you have a 21" monitor or larger get a 512MB card, you won't notice the difference too much between 256 and 512 if your monitor < 20".
I suggest getting the X1900XT. Get the 512MB version if you don't plan on upgrading your card for a few years.

Saku,
--Thanks, so it's about monitor clutter then? I heard Non-lcd (Ctr?) monitors normally are less cluttery, but besides the point i'm getting max a 19 inch screen. As for LCD or CTR? i was going to go for an lcd but recently heard being cheaper and less prone to monitor lag since i have the space ctr might be better. I do plan on upgrading in 2 years.

myocardia,

Thanks for that link, although its confusing. i *believe* the bench is showing the GS being more powerful, but the conclusion suggests ati is the better bet.

If you're willing to spend the extra $30-$40, get the 512mb version. It definately helps in some games.

The 7900GS is only a little better than a 7800GT in performance, so it's really not all that impressive.

So as long as this is in the 200-300 range the Nvidia 7900 GS and GT are...Then the radeon XT Radeon XTX or XT whichever it is i should getting being better? WHO THE ****** NAMES THESE CARDS!!!!! I'm sure its alright if you're an ethusiast but seriouslly...XT, XTX, GS, GT It's confusing me poor stupid mind! Sorry for my outburst...But honestly =)

So what i understand is i should get the ATI version of a midrange card, probably the X1900 XT 256mb, or the X1900 XTX 256mb....If they're in similar range.

Edit: And possibly the 512 version but i'm not really leaning towards it, i have money put away for a graphics card update in two years

To make a long story short, in the 200-300$ range ATi has no competition.

You can get a X1900GT for 199$, which is better in every way than a 7900GS, and in some cases competes with a 7900GT. Next step up is a X1900XT 256mb for about 230-240$, which beats about every 7900GT except maybe some superoverclocked superxpensive ones, and completely obliterates the 7900GS. Next step up is the X1900XT 512mb for about 280$, about 10% faster on average as the 256mb version, and handy for higher resolutions. The X1900XTX always comes in the 512mb version, and generally not worth the extra dough over the XT version.

You'll see the 7950GT show up as competition for the X1900XT, but as of now ATi's kid is the better value.
