She just wants me to marry a korean girl cuase she's an oldschool grandma

That's a nice way of describing RACISM.

umm not racism
Yes it is.

It is and it isn't.
It is discrimination based on race, but it isn't predjudice/belief that one race is superior to others.
But in its discrimination it is not abusive or offensive, and it's more a matter of preference than outright discrimination.
It might be racist if she said "Marry a Korean girl or I will disown you", but really it's just a preference for what he should do.

Most people from that generation don't see it as racism, it was just a way of life that was ingrained in them. My Grandmother cals black people "Those colored people". That doesn't mean she HATES black people, that's just the way she is from being brought up in a segregated world. My grandparents had black people working for them as nanny's, gardners, drivers, etc. so she just viewed them as "the help". It's not like she won't interact with people because of their skin color though.

At least she doesn't keep a loaded gun on her coffee table and joke about how she likes shooting cans.

You know......mexiCANs, afriCANs, puerto riCANs.

Maybe his grandmother (who assumedly can only speak Korean) wants him to marry a korean girl (who can speak korean assumedly) so that she can communicate with her grand-daughter-in-law.

yeah my grandfather and grandmother are that way to. I figure since they were brought up to be raciest and they are 80+ then they are due to die soon. I just try to raise my daughter without such negitive thoughts.

Whenever I would watch basketball, my grandmother used to walk by and always comment about how black the players were and how disgusting they looked.

My friend told me his grandmother took a bus to downtown Los Angeles and thought she took a bus and got off in Africa.

Maybe.

And maybe she is also still racist. Not racist in the "hang the n*ggers" stereotype of hate, but the simple racism of closed-minded ignorance and xenophobia. Some of the nicest people in the world are "racist" in that way -- and, yes, that is still racism.

Again, a nice way of saying racist. Your grandmother thinks of an entire race of people (blacks) as beneath her. As servants and service workers.

That's more "Classism" than "Racism" as she doesn't hold anything against a black person who she might have to answer to (I.E. Doctor, Cop, etc.). It was different back then. You're trying to make everything to black and white when it's not (pun intended).

What's really funny about one of my grandmothers is that she has a picture of a black guy on her refrigerator. About 4 inches away is a confederate flag magnet. I burst out laughing when I saw it, and suggested she use the magnet to keep the picture up.

I used to be a mamber of a music group that traveled all over the country. I've seen racism in every corner of the country, and it's just as ugly regardless of geography. It can also be funny, in a sad way too. One family we saw was having dinner at the table next to us at a small dinner in PA. There was a Asian guy, a black guy and a latino in our group along with 4 "whitey's". Somehow we ended up talking to the family about racism. The dad of the family, in perfect seriousness, after taking a big bite of corn on the cob (and with butter and corn dripping off his mouth) says "i'm not racist. I don't hate those damn ni**ers."

Talk about a abrupt stop to the convo. 🙂

she says a black quarterback could never win the superbowl.

Nonsense. Everyone knows that black people have special chemicals in their hair that make them run fast.

my father thinks the same way. That I should marry a chinese, or at least a vietnamese girl (at the very least) I have a 1/2 chinese 1/2 vietnamese 😀.

Anyways, he told me that I shouldn't go out of my race, but its even worse if my sister does because she is a girl. Then i smirked at him and said "black chicks are hot" and turned around, haha.

I like girls of all races btw. I just so happen to have an asian one.

Funny, I don't think any of my grandparents are racist, and they all grew up in the South.

the north is more racist than the south.

I don't know, I haven't seen any Klan meetings around here lately...

EDIT - that's not a slam on the south, I just think that the strong presence of the KKK in the South makes the North not seem so bad
