The other GPS thread reminded me about my crappy weekend I was trying to forget...anyway, I was parked in a busy parking lot. (people all around)...When I was gettin ready to walk out to the parking lot...someone paged my car and license plate number and I knew some crap had happened....I get out to my car and the window was smashed out and my GPS was gone (fortunately it was a TOMTOM one so at least it wasn't a real expensive unit) and the dumbass thieves didn't even touch some stuff I had laying in the back seat worth at least $500...
I'll be taking my GPS inside with me most of the time from now on...unless it's only a 5-10 in and out or I can see the car from where I'm at....This sucks but I guess you live and you learn....

Anyway, I was registered on TomTom and I wondered if I contacted them if they could somehow shut it down or something....anyone have any experience with this?

Yeah it sucks... thieves did $1400 worth of damage to my wife's car to get her GPS that retailed for under $200 at the time.

TomTom won't be able to do anything. GPS thievery is rampant. Always take it with you, too easy to steal.

Man that sucks and it seems like alot of trouble for something relatively worth so little espicially to pawn probably.
it really ruined my weekend man it happened on saturday at like 3:30 so I couldn't get it fixed till monday and I had to drive from st. louis to chicago and deal with thunderstorms and all kinds of crazy crap for two days straight with no damn window and my trunk and backseat were filled with stuff...making it hard to do anything because I couldn't leave the car alone like that because of the possibilty of more opertunistic thieves...

Reminds me of the time I walked into Circuit City for 20 minutes, walked out to find my car had been broken into (luckily it was picked cleanly, no damage to the car).

Car CD headunit worth about $50 (maybe less) was stolen.

$3000 worth of new laptops in my back seat were untouched.

I had never been more happy about being robbed in my life.

Had something like that. Thieves broke into GF's jeep when we were out shopping. Stole her CD's and her GPS, (maybe 200$ total), left the laptop and 2200 in cash in the backseat alone. I know that exact feeling your talking about

Yeah, I had one of these experiences just last week. Somebody went through my unlocked car while I was sleeping. I opened it up in the morning and found two doors ajar, my glove box rummaged through, etc. There really wasn't anything in there worth stealing, but my nice Spy shades were sitting comfortably on my passenger seat, as was my 4GB memory stick and a few dollars I had in my ash tray.

The one thing they actually stole? My tin of wintergreen Altoids. Seriously, who the hell steals Altoids? It's like a slap in the face. If I meet some hobo on the street with minty fresh breath, I'll deck the bastard.

Put it in the glove box.

If you still have the suction cup gps holder on the window, that's the first place they'll look.

Yeah, but in the middle of the day they might be a bit less ballsy if they don't actually see it sitting right there like a trophy.

I doubt tomtom will do anything. They no have liability to help you or "track it down by satelite" as many people hope they would.

Don't count on it.

Tom Tom may have a link to the device if it is hooked up to their Tom Tom Home software on the computer. They obviously can't do anything wirelessly, but if the perp plugs it into his USB port and installs the map update SW, they may be able to.

Aren't most GPS units one way only? They get multiple signals from several satelites and triangulate your position... they don't send your position back up.
