This guy calls up, wants me to write a NAT table into his Cisco 675 to let him play games online. No big deal, I can wildcard all the ports & open them wide open for everything. Turns out he has two computers. I warned him that although he would be able to game from either computer, he wouldn't be able to connect to the same game server using both computers at the same time.
Customer: Well why not?
Me: Because there's no way for the game server to differentiate between the two systems.
Customer: Why not?
Me: Because that's the way the internet works.
Customer: Well why haven't they figured out a way around that?
Me: There's nothing we can do about it. It's a limitation of the internet.
Customer: That's a drag. What happens if I want to have a friend over & play as a team against someone?
Me: It can't be done.
Customer: Well, they didn't tell me that when I ordered this.
Me: Well, there is one way you could do it. You could get a static IP block.
Me: (explains what static IPs are, the cost involved, etc.)
Customer: Well can you just give me one more?
Me: No, we can't do that.
Customer: Well that's a drag. Well, for now let's just set this up. I'll to someone else later about getting a second IP address.
Then I had the joyous experience of trying to explain to him how to share files, copy files from one computer to another on his network, and use Windows explorer. Genius kept trying to drag folders from a shared folder onto his Start button, and onto the Windows Explorer icon. (This part is way beyond what we technically support, but I decided to help him anyway.)
