My girlfriend's laptop's all broke!

My girlfriend's having a problem with her laptop. Every so often, the display'll get all messed up. Lines across the screen and whatnot. I took a picture. It get's like that across the entire screen sometimes. But sometimes when it gets jostled, the lines shift or go away all together. It doesn't do this when it starts up; it usually takes a while. And when it shuts down, they go away before it logs off. Any suggestions on what might be causing the problem?

Could be heat I guess. Is the laptop's fan still working? You should notice it cutting on and off from time to time during use.
