My girlfriends brother owes her $450

My girlfriend is living at home with her parents this summer to be closer to her job. She's starting grad school in the fall. Her brother is "subletting" her apartment, but they never made up a contract, so everything is informal.

He's 20 years old and was working at Staples, but he quit his job to "work" on his music (he's a pretty good bass player). Unfortunately, this leaves my girlfriend in a very tough spot. She needs the money to pay her monthly rent, but her brother simply won't pay. He refuses to get a job and neither my girlfriend nor I can think of a way for her to get the money.

What would you do to get the money? Her brother is filling his days by sitting on the couch playing his bass and going to band practice. She can't lock him out because it would put her roommates in a very bad spot by having to shut him out of the house.

throw the bum out. unfortanatly your GF will have to pay the rent until you either find someone else or the lease runs out.

the guy needs a wake up call. you can't agree to something then not fallow through.

oh and this is why you never do anything financial for family..

That's the thing - if he moves out, nothing changes for my girlfriend - she'll still have to pay the rent.

Keep 'em coming, guys - I'll suggest that she pawn his bass. 🙂

pawn his bass

use it to play baseball.

pawn as in sell, not pwn.

yes i understood. but then he may be able to get it back if you pawn it. if you use it to play baseball it has 2 effects. 1 you get the $400 worth out of it. 2) they physiological effect is also fun.

How do you get 400 dollars out of it by destroying it? I mean, if you're out to get him, then yeah, that's one way to do it, but as I understand the situation the girl doesn't hate her brother, just wants him to pay up. Pawn the bass, get your money, if he wants it back he'll need to get a damn job.

OP, have you tried confronting him and telling him to get his sh*t together?

I agree. Show him that the real world will eat him alive.

All I got to say is stay out of it dude. This is a family matter and unless you guys are married and living together you have NO say so. Even if she agrees with whatever advice you give now she very well may resent you for it in the future.

if the brother is *that* good with bass, make him sit outside the house with a hat and play his music. i'm sure generous people with drop some money in the hat. this accomplishes 2 things:

1) the brother gets to practice more

2) he makes some money. it's better than not making any money.

cheers
