my girlfriend is gonna leave me . . . but, more importantly, my computer keeps crashing.

Well, to be honest my girlfriend has already left me (citing that i spend too much time on my computer). However, I figure, that I can avoid another such occurrence if I could figure out why my computer has so many problems (thus, getting around spending all my time on the computer). Anyway I have two harddrives on my computer. The old (slave ) harddrive has slowly been deteorating, but has lately become unbearable, since it freqently crashes my computer. Morever, a lot of the files on it (though still appearing when you look at the harddrive) are no longer accessible (most of them now saying they are 4 kilobytes in size when they were originally many megs in size (like mp3's). I can't even scandisk or disk defragmenter on it, cuz it just ends up crashing . . . please help me. And, if anyone has any recomendations for new possible girlfriends .. .i am more than open to suggestion.

Oh yeah i ran virus scan and found one virus but it is not something which affects the harddrive in this way (its namee i think, is W32/pretty.gen2@mm.).

Thanx again

ok, you are the man, that is the funniest thing ive ever heard. i dunno about those hard drives. get your girlfriend back though. its not worth it over a computer

I think it's safe to say that your old hard drive is pretty much dead. If you can get any files off of it using Xcopy32 in a DOS prompt, do it, but don't be too disappointed if you can't get anything off of it. After you've done that, find a nice, high bridge and drop it off. Take a camera along and take a picture of the impact 🙂 As far as the girlfriend goes, show her the picture, then get down on your knees, and beg her please....if she knows what the heck that mess in the picture is, she might indeed forgive you 😉

yeah, i suppose a computer isn't something to lose a girlfriend over . . .but i figure since i already lost mine, i might as well find a new one who can do my own tech support.

as uhlee81's roommate i must say that his girlfriend left him NOT because he spends too much time on his computer, but rather because he can't handle the fact that his girlfriend has a better computer than he does. she has a sony 10x8x32x burner while he has a lousy hp 8x4x24x - yes this is truly sad. why, this is even worse than your wife making more money than you. another reason that she left him is because he's too chicken to overclock his pIII450 - how can you expect ANY girl to respect a man that doesn't overclock.

oh, as advice goes, i told him that his HD is gone and to salvage what he can by burning the files, repartitioning, then formatting again.

. . . about that whole cd burner thing. So, I may have mentioned to my ex-girlfriend about my astonishment that she had such a device (she doesn't know much about computers), and I also might have, perhaps, talked about said device for a little bit longer than was wise. And, maybe, in theory, she might have said "wait a second . . .it really bugs you that I have a better cd burner than you do, doesn't it?" (which i weakly denied). However, that did not directly lead to us breaking up, might have helped us along that path . . . but, more importantly, does anyone have anymore suggestions about my computer issues, i would really like to salvage it (i have given up salvaging the fragile remnants of my former relationship)

First Off, Forget the girl...The worlds full of them, they come and go as easily as your local bus service...(usually late and full.) Love@aol is your best bet...you meet people as desperate as you are for human contact, and some of them actually understand computers.

Secondly, and most important your computer. Your hard drives as dead as your previous relationship. Collect what you can from both, find a new ride, buy a new drive and get over it.

Hope this helps,
Walt

Yeah, forget the girl. Just treat the next one better. And while you're trying to salvage data, try to make sure you don't also salvage the virus!

Regards,
Jim

Been thinking about this problem?before any of us could give you sound advise on the girlfriend vs. computer issue I think we need to see a photo (preferably of the ?girlfriend? and the computer). Some girls are worth way more than any computer?then again, some 486s are worth more than several girls put together.

Some girls are worth way more than any computer?hen again, some 486s are worth more than several girls put together.

Well stated...

Though this is entiredly a disturbed conversation

Don't be so sure crazychicken, I've seen this website selling this item named "Pandora's Box". It sits in a 5.25' slot and has an interchangable interface for his or her pleasure...

If only i knew that link would ever be so handy, i wouldn't have lost it <sigh>...

Despite the advice above, DO NOT look for a girl who understands computers! In my experience, the only thing in the world that's worse than a boring tech job is having to hear about somebody else's boring tech job over dinner every night!

just like jay said in chasing amy...

theres one bitch in the world... one bitch, with many faces....

Now for your computer problem...

try running the scandisk in dos mode, should work then

Kudos on the topic
