don't leave any kind of bag or containers visible in the vehicle, ever.

That sucks and I'm sorry to hear that.

On a side note...who the hell has $600 worth of make-up related stuff? I'd have a serious sit down if my wife spent anything near that on makeup.

Probably won't cover the makeup, unfortunately. Homeowners/renters insurance probably would cover it, but you don't want to make a claim for $600 (probably would be less than the deductible anyway).

Some asshole broke the window in my wife's car to get a GPS that was worth at most $100. $1400 damage. I wouldn't be opposed to cutting off the hands of thieves.

I'm sure you spend $600 dollars on things she finds frivolous :p

As I side, she might be a professional, or it could be a serious hobby of hers.

Well it goes like this....

Makeup, for her, if not most women, becomes a collection. You pick up a 15-20 dollar thing here, there, gifts, etc.

on top of the bag itself which is probably 40 bucks, and the brushes (the brushes are the most expensive thing, a mirror, etc.

it adds up.

The problem is (aside from the obvious) that make up bag probably has 600 bucks worth of shit in there. Her brushes are 100 bucks each, plus all the make up, which is expensive.

And then she has to get the window fixed

and she doesnt have a job, and is trying to get one and its really hard right now to find a job.

ugh. i'm just pissed.

Bolded the most important parts..

ok, 20 bucks each for the actual make up. foundation, powder, eye shadow (3 for shading/ blending), liner (2), lipstick and gloss. thats about 200 there alone. wtf does she carry a complete redo kit in her car? im just sayin...

sucks it happened, but if you leave stuff visible you cant really expect the "unwashed masses" to not take it. locks only keep honest people honest.

My buddy got his car broken into last winter. He had just come back to school after winter break and he got back at 3 in the morning and went inside for some soup before unpacking. He came back out 20 minutes later and the window was smashed in. He had all his clothes and shoes, his guitar (hes a guitar major so that hurt), ipod, and cd's stolen. The only thing they left were his weed and his pipe. He never figured that one out. I myself had my window smashed and all my cd's stolen.

if they caught the thieves, would you want their hands chopped off so that they could never steal again?

From recent experience, a passenger window shouldn't be impossibly expensive to fix. Mine was ~$200 (though, obviously, it's tough when you're jobless).

The makeup, not being a fixture in the car, won't be covered under auto insurance (my radio was covered, my bluetooth headset and gps were not). Renter's or homeowner's would cover it, but I'll bet the deductible is higher than $600.

$1400 in damage from breaking a window?

They scratched the door while leaning in as well as a chrome trim piece around the window and somehow damaged some panels on the interior of the door. Also they somehow managed to damage the shifter handle (cosmetic damage). And it was an Acura, so I guess the parts would be slightly more expensive than for a Honda or whatever.

"Minor" damage to a car adds up quickly.

I've had my car broken into twice. Lost a stereo and some valuables the first time, a stereo the second time. Both times getting the window fixed was the most annoying part. I wonder if it might actually be better to just leave the car open so the thief can steal my trivial things without breaking the window.

I remember a friend of my older brother had a convertible. He left it unlocked so that thieves would not slash the roof.

Of course, he did not leave anything in the car.

I saw in New York that many of the religious Jews drive junkers and have signs in the windows that read "No radio".
