No advice, but I've read good things. A rat might be easier and they are more popular (so more resources) but your GF might be squeamish.

*attemping to hold back comments involving Sonic*

I think they'd be along the same lines as Guinea Pigs.

they're pretty cool, you can even pet them... one direction only though. baisically like having a gerbil or a guinea pig. though i don't think they eat their young.

I was thinking about getting one. They're like $100. But would it really hurt if you "pet" them the wrong way? It's not like they're porcupines.

they're banned in several states so check on that before trying to get one.

They're pretty cool... there was a girl here on OT that used to breed them, but I can't remember her name.

They (in fact, almost any kind of pet) need lots of space. Get a huge cage if possible.

Hedgehogs can easily become obese. If a pet hedgehog appears to be gaining too much weight, it is important that the hedgehog?s caretaker cut back on sweets, on fat, and perhaps on the amount of food altogether. That a hedgehog can no longer roll completely into a ball is a sign of obesity.

i thought that was kind of funny for some reason.
