I'd write a letter to the editorial section of your campus newspaper, and/or contact the media.
Well, she wouldn't want to do that (she wants to go there for grad school as well) and it was more of an observation than a call for rebellion.. But it is odd, isn't it?
No its not. Date rape is a criminal action. If convicted you will serve some form of jail time, then when you go back to Columbia you will either be suspended or put on probation. If you pirate you get your info sent to the RIAA and sued, but you are not put on probation or suspended.
But the difference is that Columbia is ACTIVELY enforcing the anti-piracy rules... Columbia is not the one filing charges for cases of date-rape, the victim is... As far as Columbia is concerned, probation/etc. is their final judgement and it's up to the victim the press further charges... The problem I have with their choice to actively persue pirates is an abstract one...
You have to be CONVICTED of date rape, in court, for Columbia to put you on probation, or suspension. Good lord. Talk about over reacting. Columbia is enforcing anti-piracy policy, because 1. students are abusing their services, and 2. because they are protecting their asses.
Like you said its up to the rape victim to file charges. If the accused is convicted then Columbia will put them on probation/suspension.
