my geforce4 sucks?

ok so i just upgraded from a gf2 ti to a gf4 ti4400. so i was trying to play rallisport challenge on my new card and although it looks ALOT better than my gf2, it becomes choppy when i turn on AA and AF. what gives? i thought gf4 4400 was supposed to run with AA and AF! ok so my CPU is pretty dated...im running a althlon4 1.4 GHz. so i thought im gettin bad performance in rallisport cuz its a new game which prolly needs a faster CPU. so i tried an older game...Homeworld Cataclysm. this game, I saw NO difference from my gf2. and with all the vid settings turned up, the game became choppy on the in game videos. i should be gettin nasty framerates on older games atleast with my new gf4....shouldnt i?!

GF4Tis are unable to move high AA+AF settings. At best 2xAA 4xAF, and with a big performance hit.

The ti4400 can run aa and af, though not very well. It takes a huge hit in performance with those on. Still though, you should be able to get good frame rates in older games with it on. I crank it up all the way in a lot of old games with my ti4200 it and will run fine.

GF4 applies AF to all edges at all angles instead of the hybrid process the FX\9800 parts perform. This is actually the best way to do it but requires a lot of memory bandwidth which the GF4 lacks.

With my Ti4400, I just don't use either, as in this case it isn't worth the performance hit. I suggest you get used to that.

im starting to think i should have spent an extra 50 - 60 bucks on a 9500 instead of spending 100 on a 4400

Yeah spending the extra money would definitely have been worth it if you love aa and af and can't live without them.

haha i can definately live without them. i just bought the vid card thinkin that it will be able to handle AA AF with ease. eh...dissapointment sucks

Rallisport Challenge kills video cards, I believe that the 9700 Pros can run AA/AF, but anything < has great difficulty doing so. For that game, the highest Resolution and best Quality(don't remember exact setting but has:Low/Norm/High/Highest as options) within the game. "High" is very sweet, but I'd think it would chug on your system.

That said, a cpu upgrade would likely help or(assuming it's an older system) a cpu/mobo/ram upgrade.

AF and AA are completely dependant on your vga, average fps without them enabled is more system dependant.

the 9700PRO can run 2xaa and 8x performance af with less than a %8 loss in fps regardless of the system.

My old 8500 ran aa and af better than both my geforce 4 ti4400s.

my old 8500 couldnt even do trillinear filtering, which was rather stuipid, since billinear AF is just foolish, banding all over the place.

I think you are right. I think buying a geforce 4 is a bad choice at this point unless your budget is REALLY limited. It was a good card, but its too old, especially for 100$. Take it back and get a 9500, or even 9700. you sound like you want to use aa/af so buy a decent vid card

I think that may have been an older driver problem that was eventually fixed, I think.

The FX5200 (according to Anandtech's benchmarks) is better at AA/AF than the GF4 Ti4200.

He must of been talking about the iq vs performance tradeoff. I doubt anybody would honestly notice a difference between the GF4s and FX or R3.xx AF\AA without really delving into the frame. But the GF4 does do it better IQ wise. Performance wise it is a dog.

I run my FX5900 with 2xAF, 2xAA @ 1600X1200 and everything is has smooth edges and good FPS. I bumped it upto 4xAF and 4xAA and I couldnt notice a difference in one of the most jaggie games I have played in awhile(Dark ages of Camelot). MSFlightsim2K looks amazing on my FX5900. I regularily fly a continental 757 and it just looks awesome with AA\AF.

no point returning this card. 15% restocking fee and shipment back is gonna kill me. guess im gonna stick it out with nvidia
<in denial> ati's suck anyways </in denial>

i have 512 mb ram and running a athlon 4 1.4ghz on a ECS K7S5A. i can understand why rallisport is sucky, but why the hell is cataclysm choppy?
