My gaming rig is dead

I built this system a few years back, and it's finally given up the ghost, the mobo is AGP, SATA capability, but not used, anyway, I need a system from the ground up. What would you recommend in the 500 - 750 range?
Or am I kidding myself?
This sucks so much, and it's not as if it was only a gaming rig, I watched movies, used guitar tutoring software on it, basically it was how I got and transferred information.
It's really shitty when something like this happens.

Pricing it out, I could get a really decent system short of 700 less tax and shipping. Just the building of it ...

building really iws pretty brainless today, the worst part is waiting on the OS install because you cant make that go any faster.

also if you can save parts from your old comp you save even more money, but yea you have a few options for a new rig for your price range

Just keep a constant eye on Dell's outlet deals. I have a friend that is constantly picking up Q6600 systems with HD3650's with 3GB of ram for under $400. Plunk a couple hundred down on a nice video card and you'll be set.

I priced it out, and I know things are getting easier and easier to build, thanks again for the link, I'm probably going the newegg link.

Don't forget to check the hot deals section. Last time I looked there was a good case & PSU deal, Probably a few more things you'll need also.

If you have 600, I recommend replacing the above gfx card with a 4850. That would increase gaming performace by quitte a bit. Otherwise the above rig is very good.

He can just reuse a copy of XP, and save the money.

There's also an Antec PSU and Case combo at Newegg right now. Earthwatts 500W PSU and Antec Three Hundred case for $79.94. With free shipping.

500w psu and 2gb ram $23 http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=988785

now both of those are sold out but this is the way you save money/shop. NOT paying retail at newegg.

Definitely!

Look into hot deals threads before you lay down the cash. Some things you won't be able to find there, but a lot of times you can find really good deals on RAM, PSUs, and GFx cards. Also you will probably find some reviews from AT members on the various products in the Hot Deals section. Go with the links/items we've all given you as a starting point and see if there are any viable alternatives to these parts in Hot Deals.

Cool. Thanks. I'll check those out. I just didnt want to get nickel and dimed to death ordering a card here, a drive there, etc... and get hit with shipping each time. Newegg has fair pricing IMO, and I've never had any issues with them.

This is actually a really good time to build a computer (and it'll only get better when quad cores can be had for sub-$100). You can build something decent for $500, and something damn fast for $700.

As a rule of thumb, Intel CPU these days are better than same price AMD CPUs. But as vivithemage said, each to their own....
