My games were stolen

So my games were stolen about 2 years ago and I never really thought about replacing them, but I've got the urge to play one of the games. Only the first CD was stolen. I've got the rest of the CDs, the Cd key, and the box.

How would I be able to obtain these games without having to repurchase them?

It really depends what game we are talking about. Lot's of game clients can be downloaded for free, but of course require a activation code/cd key, for example the Guild Wars and Lotro clients are both downloadable for free. I would simply google the game in question. I bet you could also download it using a torrent. Not sure how legal this is though, since most of those games are illegal and come with cracks/cd-key generators. But I think if you have a legit cd-key, downloading the game using torrents isn't illegal.

just download the iso of the game and use your cd key. i dont think i need to tell you where to find them. you should be familiar with torrents.

and by the way, its perfectly legal as long as you have the product key. thats your "license".

There are no legal means of doing that.

what are you talking about. its perfectly legal. when you pay for a game you pay mostly for the license, and partially for the distribution media. the profit comes from the license, not from the media.

you downloading the binararies is not infringing anything, as long as you own a license to use that application.

3 of the games I really want to play.

Swat 3
Chronicles of Riddick
Splinter Cell (the second game out. Pandora's tomorrow I think)

Could I just call up these companies to explain my situation and will they ship me the games?

its not likely that they will ship for free. they would probably ask you first to provide your license to check that you actually have a license, and they would probably charge you for shipping (which would be cheaper than buying them again).

just download them and burn them. and use your legally purchased product key.

xboxist is right that it is not (technically) legal, but morally there is nothing wrong with it.

Chronicles of Riddick has Sierra as publisher ? Chances are it can be downloaded using Steam ?

Btw, it might not be technically legal, but I think it's only illegal if you copy files with the intention of using them illegaly, where as he has the legal key, and thus it would not be illegal, and not against the law either.

I would suggest contacting the publishers of the games and acquiring replacement discs through them.

Downloading the games may violate the EULA of certain titles and it increases the risk of malware infection (due to the P2P network).

Are CD keys tied to specific CDs?

Not for the most part, although there would probably be exceptions if the discs had custom content like a limited edition release or something.

in this case, downloading is exactly like copying the discs for your own backup purpose. and since its legal to backup your discs, its therefore legal do download the images of the disc(s).

what is not legal is finding a way to get around licensing the product. thats when you are stealing from the company, because you are not authorized by the owner of the binaries to execute their application. thats called piracy. people associate piracy with non-original copies of the binaries. thats a huge fallacy.
