i hate this sh1t....i had like 100gigs of crap, most of which i never burned (figured i'd do it after the semester ended)

DAMN YOU WD!!! I'M GONNA SLAP THE SH1T OUTTA YOU BA$TARDS AFTER I FINISH MY EXAMS!!!

it's a WD (western digital)...I purchased a retail model though, so I know I have a three year warranty or some sh!t...

thing is, it's hardly a month old and it died...

this is the first time i've had to RMA a harddrive...how long does it usually take to get a new one? (i'm assuming they just send you a new one -- or do they actually try to fix the problem?) it'd rock if they tried to fix it, hopefully I can get my precious data back 🙁

Add another to your list then.............had one die two weeks ago (WD Special Edition 120GB) and a Maxtor 80 GB in another system in mid March............🙁 Want to hear the funny part.................the ones still running and that haven't failed me to date are the IBM's.........😕 2 75GXP's, a 60GXP and a 120GXP and all are still going strong! (knock on wood.......)

LOL, all HDD mfg's have drives that fail. IBM is the most noteworthy due to the 75GXP series, and the lame class action lawsuit.

That's pretty funny. Should've bought two and had a mirror or Raid 5 setup going. Should've spent that extra money.

The only thing I use 120gb (raid 0 array) is for captureing tv in raw avi as I don't mind wasting space. If you have that much space, and lose 100GB, chances are it's best that it fails. You won't go to jail that way.

LOL,I know, was just being a bit sarcastic, I've no great confidence in IBM these days

I hear ya. I have lost quite a bit of faith in them. I no longer use IBM HDD's in customer builds either.

I've switched to Maxtor,ok thus far but I still think the IBM's drives are quieter

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't I see something a year or so ago about IBM now building WD's hard drive line for them? New WD's sure look a lot like IBM drives. Oh well, that's why I use Seagate.

you should always backup regularly but I make it a point to do so religiously within the first 3 months of installing a new drive ,it seems like if they're going to bite the dust due to mechanical defect they usually do so within that time frame

<< see, the cool part about having a 20 and a 30 is if you want any new.....stuff.....you backup the old stuff.

amen for cd-rs.

Yup, that's the one good thing that I can say about my 20GB drive...aside from that it's fast. 🙂

Have you tried Seagate? Cuda IV's are very, very quiet.

Dunno how they stack up for reliability, but I love mine.

I'm delegating it to secondary storage, though, once my 120 GB WD arrives. 8 MB cache? Bye bye Seagate.

WD used IBM's technology in the "Expert" series of HDD's if I recall correctly.

yeah, there's a 50% chance my computer sees the hd after post...and if it DOES see it, it continues to boot EXTREMELY slowly (and it usually crashes along the way)..by slow i mean booting for an hour then giving some BSOD "STOP" message

i popped in WD's Diagnostics Disk and it said there was an error with my hd, and said it would try to fix it...at the rate the complete diagnostic test was going it, it would finish checking my drive in a month 🙁
