Just over 3lbs... I hope it's ok. I haven't talked to him since early this morning :(

I guess there's really no point to this topic, but for those of you that pray, if you'd pray for them I'm sure they'd really appreciate it.

My son (pic below) was born 8 weeks early. The difficult thing at that age is that the lung development isn't quite there.

He spent 3 weeks in the NICU. It was a jarring experience for us because there were babies born much much earlier than ours and would spend a couple of months in the NICU and would likely have problems growing up. We counted our blessings knowing that he only had to stay in there 3 weeks and the worst he came out with was asthma and there's no telling if that was a result of the premature birth or not.

I'll definitely keep your friends in my thoughts. It is real rough seeing your baby in one of those plastic boxes hooked up to a ventilator and not really being able to touch them but a few minutes a day.

10 weeks early isn't often too bad of a situation these days. modern medicine has a matured practice for the caring of early deliveries.
best of luck to your buddy, his wife and their child. but it should turn out healthy. 3lbs is a pretty good weight for an early delivery, I've seen reports of babies under a 1lb ending up healthy after time.

My fiance is a neonatal intensive care nurse and frequently sees babies born earlier/smaller than that. As long as the baby doesn't have any major problems (other then begin early) chances are that it will be fine.

As mentioned above, lung development or lack there of is a big factor.

I hope everything works out well for your friend and his wife and baby.

I just checked my calendar, and my wife is about 10 weeks away from her due date. I pray that her pregnancy goes full-term. We actually have our first lamaaz class tonight too.

They were actually working on their nursery, too. They painted it this past weekend.

Thanks for the support/reassuring words, guys. I'll show him this thread when I see him again.

Guy I worked with had his baby born at 23 weeks, and I think it weighed about 1lb. She survived, and I never heard of any health complications, though I imagine there must be some complications stemming from it. Girls handle early births much better than boys, and black babies are also hardier in these situatinos.

All that shit gets thrown out the window once the major contractions kick in. Get her to agree to an epidural and skip the class...

My wife wanted to go the whole 'natural childbirth' route with our first and I freaked when after an hour of fierce pushing they still had to do an Episiotomy.

My niece had quintuplets at 5 months. Unfortunately, only 2 survived. Two died shortly after birth, the third died some weeks later. :(

destrekor's right - I'm 33 and was born 10 weeks early ? now I'm 6'5" and my worst health problem is asthma. Kiddo will probably be fine.
