Bwahahahaha! My friend called me this afternoon, said that when he turned on his pc, all his icons had been changed, his wallpaper was back to Windows default etc...He said it's like the computer had reset itself exactly to the way it was when the HP software was first installed at the store, like all my icon changes etc... had been autorepaired. I told him that if the HP does that, then there is no point for me to go and rechange his icons, colours, fonts and sounds until he contacts the HP people to figure out what happened (frankly I haven't a clue what happened ;))...At least it did not uninstall his utilities.

LMAO, he said that it's like his comp has a mind of its own, like it's possessed. I told him that if he goes through with his plan and install also AOL, he will end up with a truly schizophrenic PC.

LMAO
:D

I wonder if the HP and AOL softwares would nullify each other or instead exacerbate each other to spawn some unholy beast of a computer. Where's a good exorcist when you need one? :D

Mixing HP and AOL software is like mixing matter and antimatter. No one's really sure what would happen, but we're afraid to try it. :D

Was he "logging" into windows before and didn't log in this last time (ie just hit cancel?). Sounds like a windows profile issue to me.

Maybe such a combination would alter the cpu's instruction set alltogether in a strange unholy manner and it would have constructed a basic artificial intelligence and with the computer on AOL, the AI made from mixing HP and AOL, the AI would learn all about the idiots out there and learning from the idiots, it becomes a super hacking AI and powers up without notice and hacks into government files for its own evil purposes. Then one day, the AI would realize human inferiority and would use military access codes to launch a huge world wide nuclear strike against major cities. Then with its programming AI, it would copy itself over to the Intel and AMD fab plants to make more AI brains to power the newly manufactured robots and soon a whole race of robots would overpower us humans. All because of one small fool willing to go the path of the dinosaurs...

dennilfloss--Sounds like HP has some proprietary crape that "resets" to original configuration (config.1st?). Maybe it does this autotragically, when it detects a "problem". I would suggest you tell your friend quickly that you DO NOT support AOL, don't know anything about it, and don't want to. Least, that's how I do it. Oh, and I always say, in a nice, helpful manner, "Oh, just call AOL support and have them help you. Isn't that what is supposed to be really good about having AOL?"

Has anyone ever heard of anyone actually getting support from AOL?

I'm about to enter AOHELL. But, it will only be on my laptop, which will be reformatted when I'm finished with my "use" of AOHELL. I got this really neat 500 free hour cd. Kool.....

As far as I know, there shouldn't be a Login issue since he is the only user on that computer and there should be only one profile (no password implemented AFAIK). Anyway, it's between him and HP support as far as I am concerned. ;)

I hope they speak French because he doesn't speak and barely reads English! (and his OS is in English) :)

If you mean Hewlett Packard, which I assume you are, you should pray for your friend. I have called them about my computer too, and they might as well have hired me, lol. It's kind of un-nerving when the tech who is supposed to help you says "Um, I don't know whats wrong." Yeah, thanks buddy! And if you don't have a warranty, they charge you a fortune for help. Your friend is in for a cruel lesson in life. ;)

Beware of HP's "Sleazy Internet"...

It seems the good folks at Hewlett-Packard decided to make it nice and easy to sign up for the Internet...unless you don't want to use one of their pre-selected ISP's. It's a tech's nightmare; the only way we can run the ICW and get the settings straight is to uninstall it from the control panel.

That's all fine and good, until you get a clueless person, all proud of his shiny new computer, who doesn't want it removed. "But they put in on there to make the Internet easier!" And I have to politely explain that the computer he is so proud of IS A COMPLETE POS, AND IF YOU HAD BOUGHT A DELL THIS PHONE CALL WOULD HAVE BEEN DONE TEN MINUTES AGO!!!!!

Don't even get me started on Norton System Works 2000 and what it does to everyone's mail settings.

dennil:
Just repeat after me: "I don't do tech support for store bought computers. I don't do tech support for store bought computers." Repeat 1,000 times. To your a$$hole friend's FACE.
