it happened wed evening, he was at the grocery store and got home and there were fire trucks, total loss, save his dog and some clothes. His mom's friend is letting them live in a rental house that is furnished. Man, he is my age, 17 and he just lost everything he had. i cant imagine.

That's like my worst fear. Seriously, when I leave for school I check the stove, the washer, dryer, all the lights, and I NEVER EVER leave my computer on. I can't imagine coming home and seeing fire trucks and a smoldering apartment. :(

I've been considering leaving my computer off when I'm away... the power supply was starting to act up... can't trust these kinds of things... one little spark and everything would be gone...

[somebody has to say it]At least the dog was saved[/the end].

But yes, when you leave for any extended amount of time... check the stove/oven before you head out the door.

so he has a house that is all paid for(no mortgage company will let you have a loan without insurance), but no money for insurance?? Talk about penny wise, pound foolish.

That sucks that the house was burnt down, can't imagine how bad that is....but he should have been more wise and had insurance!

Side point....he is 17 and has a house with no mortgage....surely he can't of earnt that.....maybe god decided he didn't deserve it and he'll now have to work for a new house like the rest of us.

Indirectly he did. No banks will give you a mortgage without having homeowner's insurance. Therefore, as stated above, the house must be payed off.

or he rents. in which case the landlord is covered but the renter is not. anyways, renters insurance is cheap. should only be about 150-170 bucks/year for 25K of coverage. i bring this up every time in a thread like this because as a newspaper photographer i cover way too many fires where people did not know about renters insurance and then their residence burns down and they are SOL. I've covered two major apartment fires this year that left over 500 people homeless, only 2 families out of over 225 had renters insurance.

Yeah renter's insurance is relatively cheap. I pay like $110/yr for $50,000 worth of coverage. I'm pretty sure I don't have 50K worth of stuff in my house but i figure i'd err on the high side since it was only a couple bucks more to go from 35k to 50k in coverage.

He's lucky, My co-worker's friend died with his entire family when the Dryer caught fire when they were asleep. I never use the dryer before going to bed anymore, and I always clean the lint filter every use.

too bad about no insurance... even if you rent, you should get fire insurance (which is dirt cheap if you rent).

That has to be the worst feeling, to know you've lost everything you've worked for and are now homeless. :(
