IIRC the urban legend is that cat's saliva on their paws irritate the scratches, and increase the infection risk.

Cat's claws are not clean. Even with minor scratches, the skin raises and turns red... because their claws are not clean...

You can get cat scratch fever, no joke. I got it when I was a kid.

I can happen when a cat scratches you and it causes an infection that leads to a fever.

This will usually only happen with outdoor cats though since they get a lot more crap in their paws and claws.

What were you doing that caused it to scratch you? Most likely you were taunting it or acting obnoxious. If that is the case you probably don't have to worry about rabies. My cats scratch me sometimes when I administer medicine. No big deal, other than hurting similarly to a paper cut.
