My friend is thinking of overclocking his XP 1700+ chip but he is useing an VIA KT 266A chipset so he can't up the FSB to 166 so he thinking of unlock the chip and uping the multiplier from 11 to 13 to get run at 1.72GHz(13X133)

Things he asked me
Can he get the chip running that high by upping the multiplier?
What is a safe voltages AMD XP chip?
What is a good temp for the chip?

Thank you

The answers to his questions...
1. He could get it running that high as long as his cooling is sufficient, and the chip is a good stepping. Ask him to tell you the code on the core.
2. XPs are pretty tough chips, just try to keep it under 1.85V.
3. Good temps are under 55C. Generally speaking.

There ya go.

Theres nothing dangerous about running an XP at 1.85V. I've been doing so for 8 months with no problems.

He just unlocked his chip last night and he now running it at 12X133 (1596Ghz) at stock voltages so he going to try 13X133(1729Ghz) tonight (he have no X.5 multiplier on his mobo)
His chip have a AGKGA K core and the temp is around 45C
how hight do you think her can get it?

Well 13x133 = 1733 or 2100+....

The fact is the stepping is not the same and is older then the current 1600+ fame AGOIA's that are rocking to 2000-2200+ levels with minimal vcore adjustments....

At current I would say I would be surprise if he is completely stable right now at default vcore...Have him prime test it a bit to see if he can get it to error out. If he is stable at that level which is 1900+ levels he could possibly get to it though I think I would bet against it with just air cooling. Anything above 1.85v has been safe for many but starts getting into the realm of mch more expensive air cooling and/or exoctic cooling..Too bad on the .5x multipliers though.

But it doesn't try to hurt, right!!!!!
