My friend wants to get a new computer

would it be better for him to go out to a store and just buy one or have me build one for him? his budget is $1000 but he really doesn't want to max out on the money. He just needs the computer to do basic tasks, not really a gamer, plus wants an lcd, wireless keyboard and mouse, and surround sound.

Build it for him yourself and save the guy some money. I built a rig like your talking about for my wife for Christmas,total cost was less than $600.00 fully built with XP Home installed. She bought a Viewsonic 17" LCD for about $300.00 after rebates,the 15" is somewhat cheaper.Do some checking for prices all over the web--don't just assume that NewEgg has the best deal. I ended up buying for 5-6 different online vendors.

Use good quality components,not fire sale junk and he'll never need any tech support. It'll work like new until its time to upgrade once again.

Perfectly fine. Dell has a Dimension 3000 for $549 AR that meets every requirement his friend wants except for surround sound speakers. Get the speakers at newegg or similar and he's well under budget and has tech support and warranty. Or if he's patient, wait till Dell runs another deal where the system costs next to nothing.

my mom bought a Compaq about 5 months ago with a AMD Athlon 2800+, 512 mb's of ram, 80 GB HDD, and DVD/CD-RW drives for about $700 with a 15" LCD monitor. Now u could get the same thing with probably a 3200+ AMD 64 for about the same money. Just do that and buy a 9600XT or something and u'll have a nice comp for about $850 or so.
