My friend had a 3.0 P4 Prescott, an 865 based motherboard (I think it was an MSI but I forgot the model number), 1Gb of ram (half generic), a generic power supply, 6600gt.. He was considering (and later bought) a DFI Nforce 4 board, AMD 64 3000+ Venice (I think), IIRC he has the same ram and same video card, got a thermaltake tsunami case w/PSU and eventually a 6800GT.

While his latest system is great Iguess, I just couldn't understand WHY he had to upgrade to a completely new system when his current one was fine. I told him to Get a better PSU for his older system, a better video card and if the ram is bad, replace it as well. But instead he bought all that crap, so now I'm wondering, was it right of me to b!tch at him for this pointless (IMO) upgrade?

His old system wasn't that bad, but some people just need to be a little closer to "the edge."

Although getting a 3000+ Venice isn't exactly cutting edge o_O

It's never right to bitch at someone for their purchasing decisions, unless they're buying too many drugs and hookers

If he has the extra money hanging around, it's his funeral. So many people get caught up in upgraditis. He didn't -have- to upgrade it, but he wanted to.

Actually, I'm wondering, would it be right of me to b!tch that this thread is pointless?

If he overclocked the crap out of the venice and got a 7800GT instead, it'd be a worthy upgrade. As it is he just paid a big price premium for about a 10% increase in performance.

How is the P4 crappy? The P4 in it's day wasn't bad and infact better than the athlon XP, comparing a 478 P4 to a athlon 64 isn't fair and with multithreaded applications coming up, like with the Q4 patch, it will catch up and then the playing field should be even..
