My friend upgraded from 98 to win2k and whenever he gets into the enter administrative password neither his mouse or keyboard work, and whenever he runs setup a problem occurs that says:

file \ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded the error code is 4

He has also removed both his modem and NIC to remove conflicts...

Any ideas or suggestion on how to fix this?

You really should do a clean install. Even if you only have the upgrade CD, you can start the install and Win2k will ask for proof of a previous OS. Just put in your Win98 Cd and your set.

This sounds like a case that would best be solved by a reinstall.

If neither the keyboard nor the mouse work, it's likely that something disabled the i8042prt.sys driver. Logitech mouse and keyboard drivers, or IBM Thinkpad drivers, can do this. It can be solved with enough effort, but probably not worth it.

As for error 4, that error is "the system cannot open the file." I'm worried that the system is trying to access ntkrnlmp. This is the multiprocessor kernel. If you're upgrading from Win9x, I seriously doubt it's a multiprocessor machine.
