my friend bought a new Asus 8170 gf4 mx440 a week or so back, he gets a score of 3200 in 3d mark default [1024 768....] which he thinks is low and i agree. and he finds need for speed 5 runs slower and more jerky with his new card than his old riva tnt2 m64 32mb.
He finds the playback of intro-videos in games very jerky, like 15 fps or so.
He says he has disabled VSync but doesnt remember how, through powerstrip though.
His card memory is samsung rated tc50, so that means it can go to 400mhz ddr but stock speeds are 250 core and 333 mem and he hasnt oc'd.

Any suggestions ?
He is at agp 4x, and has set his agp aperture to 256mb in his bios [he has 448mb pc133 SD ram, p4 1.4ghz, dfi mobo].
Thanks in advance.

the MX series of GF4 cards where to put it simply SHITE so i would say get another card or stick with the old one :D i had one for about 2 days then went back to my GF3 Ti 200 @ Ti 500 which i found to be a hell of alot faster :D

The GF4 MX is not a fast card however it should be way faster then the old TNT2 he had,did he try disabling FSAA (in Nvidia properties panel) and change ansiotropic settings to a lower number?

How much is a card penalized for lacking shaders in 3dmark ?

I get 2600 on an old MX 400.

He has a DFI mobo, and he has tried the drivers he got with the card, then the latest ones from the asus website, as well as the nvidia site.
no help.

1.Your friend has a GF4 MX420 which is the slowest GF4 MX, although it appears to be one of the DDR versions of the MX420 it's still quite slow. The reason I know that your friend has a MX420 instead of a MX440 is the clock speeds, the MX440 uses 270/400 not 250/333.

2.His agp aperture size is too high, use the fault of 64mb for compatibility reasons.

3.Use coolbits which is a much more reliable method for disabling vsync.

4.Another thing which is slowing down his performance is the SDR memory he is using, if possible upgrade to DDR memory which will give him a very nice performance boost.

That's funny because at stock speeds my GF4 MX440 in my 2nd computer was actually faster than my GF3 Ti200, apart from 3dmark ofcourse. The GF4 MX440 also had much better dvd playback and image quality so I got rid of the GF3 Ti200 instead. However my GF4 MX440 is getting replaced soon with a Radeon 9000 Pro for the same reasons, better DVD playback, image quality and vastly superior anisotropic filtering performance.

yep but i use my XBox for DVD Playback so i am not fussed and my GF3 Ti 200 is overclocked so it is a HELL of a lot faster allthough i am only getting around 8000 3D Marks :'( so i am upgrading to either the Geforce FX or a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 as soon as i can :D

You don`t say what chipset or model it is ,anyway if it`s a VIA or SiS chipset make sure you have the latest AGP driver installed, also sometimes a clean install of OS is the best way to get the best video card performance(removes all the old drivers etc) and some BIOS tweaks won`t do no harm like disable all video shadowing, disable video ram cacheable, disable system bios cacheable.

it is a gf4 mx 440, thats what the asus box said, and it was kinda cheap, price of a 420, so we bought it.
he has a i845 chipset, cant use DDR. but his performance should be better than jerky-skippy vids, dont you think, with 448mb of ram ? so what if its pc133 sd ?
