Yep, he has Charter communication cable modem and they sent him a cease and desist letter.
Seems his kid has been downloading music off of Kazaa, and they do not like that.
Total B.S. if you ask me.
What do you guys think?

I certainly use up my fair share of bandwidth (both up and down) and I've not heard a peep from ATTBI. Most of what I do is either via usenet or ftp tho.....perhaps those aren't "flagged" like KazAa seems to be?

Easy.. They snoop the traffic flowing across known file sharing ports. Its not encrypted or anything and is freely viewable. Hell, they can read your emails also if they so desire.

I think it's time for him to send them a "Cease My Service" letter.....if everyone that gets one of those letters cancels their service the ISP will be hurting real quick and change their stance on this issue.

Is he sure it's because of his kid DOWNLOADING and not UPLOADING files? Downloading an MP3 is not illegal in and of itself. Neither is sharing, actually.
But according to most ISP's AUPs, serving of any kind is usually prohibited.

I'm more inclined to believe that the letter was in response to sharing files, not downloading them or using the service.

Do you use AT&T?

My brothers use it and they get disconnected every 8 hours as well.

I'm still surprised that speakeasy hasn't said a thing about my bandwidth consumption...after downloading all those linux isos...:Q:eek::D:cool:

I haven't heard porn companies complaining about this sort of thing. My guess is that the files transmitted are small and are just free advertising.

Umm, no can do - ISPs cannot monitor a customer's traffic's content without a subpoena from what I understand - otherwise it violate's privacy issues of the customer.

They most likely sent him that letter because the RIAA or MPAA or both have sent Charter an email complaining about copyrighted crap being shared.

(I work at an ISP and see the complaints from those stupid groups all the time - they even complain if people share a crappy 100MB theater taping of some old movie, good god. I don't work in the abuse area so I don't know the exact procedure, but I'm pretty sure there are rights to privacy that we cannot violate.)

Nope, just a little local ISP. And I can't complain too much, it insures that I'm not using it as a dedicated line. Most of the stuff I DL is forign TV shows.

My ISP isn't snooping FTP traffic...or they dont' care. Either way, I'm happy. :D These days, using Kazaa is like playing Russian Roultette. Sooner or later, you're gonna get caught.

And so they mail you a letter and you knock it off...for a while, then start up again. THEN they start fining you. :Q FTP-->thing of the past, but yet wave of the future. ;)

I doubt that the ISPs would care. I'd venture to say that the average non-geek internet user has no idea what Kazaa or file-sharing is. And the more leeches that get off the system, the faster it would be for us non-file-sharing people who use broadband for surfing and the occasional gaming.
