my friend glued on heatsinks on his graphics card with SUPER GLUE

LOL! It probably began to smoke. Did it actually catch fire?

Since it was on his graphics card and not CPU I doubt the CPU burnt out.

I actually did this to my ge2 force mx. I used arctic silver in the middle and super glue on the corners. Not as crazy as it sounds.Just have to watch out since it may actually fall off and short other components. Might be safe to have a backup restraining device (plastic tie)in case the glues fails.

I've done the same thing, it works great. Basically you put a small piece of tape across each of the four corners, apply thermal compound to the rest, pull off the tape, put a drop of super glue on each corner, & press the heatsink on as hard as you can.

Done properly it works very well. Done improperly? You have the potential to do serious damage.

so far no one is right

hint the superglue spilled out from under the heatsinks onto the memory connectors or whatever the metal thingys are connecting the memory onto the card

it is a geforce2 gts 32mb

cpu burnt out...monitor exploded :) sorry...didn't see that he put it on his gfx-card ;)

Don't know.....maybe...the card is now stuck in the agp-port...glued tightly and cannot be removed for god's sake..and the result is that the guy is stuck with the gf2 for the rest of his life glued in the port...and he wanted to upgrade so badly...but now he cant ? :)

I don't think the glue is on the AGP connector; the way it sounds, it just oozed out onto the memory pins on the PCB; no biggie there; superglue isn't conductive.

If done correctly, superglue works great for putting on a heatsink without a retainer clip.

I put the HSF on my GTS this way, without any thermal compound, just a layer of superglue.

The surface area of the heatsink and the flow rate of the fan as well as the ambient case temperature and surface contact between the HSF and chip are far more important than the thermal compound. Do the math.

However, if you use superglue only, you have to make sure that you have good surface contact and may need to do a little sanding of parts first.

So, I am guessing that nothing happened. Some forms of superglue may be conductive, that could cause a boo-boo if not careful.

I super glued old socket 7 heatsinks to acer voltage reg. sinks on mainboards all the time back in the day. conducted heat great

i definitevely would NOT recommend that (gluing a HS anywhere..be it cpu or gfx-card)...

If you look at the arctic-cilver webpage/instructions...they even say do NOT *touch* the copper base of the heatsink (because the oils on the skin)..and use a 100% lint free papertowel for applying the arctic silver...because each piece of lint influences the effectiveness of the HS..etc...

So....you want to tell us to put GLUE between the a HS and CPU/GPU...i just dont believe that superglue is a good thermal conductor....and i can imagine that you degrade your heatsinks's cooling capability enourmously (lose maybe about 70% or 80% effectiveness) by doing that.....no way....

did his card go from a GF2 GTS 32 MB to a GF2 GTS 16MB???

ok well first it is conductive when super glue carbonizes it becomes conductive
and little gray specs started showing up all over the place when the card was bout 130degF
so with a exacto knife he removed all of the super glue and presto it worked like new!

I wonder if superglue becomes poisonous when heated to such high temperatures.. It's definitely not recommended to breathe it in even when it's in its regular form (note the proper use of "it's" and "its", people!)

When the cooler fell of from my Athlon700 i superglued the whole thing togheter ! ;) Works fine !
Just use thermal paste and spread it out and on the corners use a drip of superglue. Place some really heavy books an evening on top of it and voila.. ready to rock!

I just hope you people realize that if you need to really GLUE something together and have good heat transfer, you can buy the Arctic Silver thermal glue compound. It's as good as the regular Arctic Silver II, but actually glues things together. They don't recommend using it between a heastink and a CPU because you will never be able to get it off. But it's great for videocard's memory heatsinks.

P.S. Do you smell funny, or is that the superglue melting on your CPU?

I used super glue once for my video card and it worked great. You just have to make sure you don't put too much on. If I have to glue anything now arctic silver epoxy is the way to go.
