My friend doesn't believe that a computer can heat an apartment

I told him I was going to run a distributed computing client to help my computers warm my apartment. He acted like I was crazy.

Am I insane??? I've always found that a computer heats up a room considerably, and I can usually open a window in the winter and not get cold. Keep in mind I live in Texas so it only goes into the 30s usually.

Sounds like a good idea for Texas, I bet not such a good idea for Nova Scoia unless you are running a super-cluster.

Youre likely using more electricity than a heater would to reach the same temperature. It is really not beneficial unless you plan to keep it running with or without the benefit of heating.

my room is definitely 15 degrees hotter than any other part of the house with the computer+crt on...but its cozy in the winter.

So the energy disappears?

I know my computer room is a lot hotter than any other room. Good in the winter, not so good in the summer.

Exactly.

Just like the trash disappears when we burn it.

a computer?

only if it's a small room with no vehntilaion or it's something like a quad-cpu server.

I've got 3 computers in my apartment, all in a large room, and have never noticed a heat difference whether they're on or off.

yeah, definitely...this room doesn't have the best of ventilation so it's typically 10 degrees hotter than right down the hallway.

And I'm hoping to buy my best space-heater yet in a few months...Proceed HPA2 or McIntosh 7106. :p

Probably a single room, not an entire apartment! :p
My guest room with a fileserver (Duron 800 w/10x 200GB 7200rpm HDDs) and netserver (mobiCel 1.6 @ 3.2GHz) keep the room an average of 3-4 C higher than the others. Useful when you're in Iowa :)

You should get rid of your hotwater tank, and just water cool your rig. Run the pipes to the shower. ;)

Yeah, I run two PC's, both with CRT monitors in the living room of an apartment. It makes a difference, especially the monitors.

we turn our comps off at night, but instead of electric heat I think we will shut off our heater and keep the comps on all night

My computer works just fine for heating a room up, when the A/C was broken in our house, it was almost unbearable to be in the same room as the computer.
