My friend claims he got nitrous on his motorcycle...

My friend has an '02 Yamaha R6, and last night he was doing this thing with a red switch right next to his throttle that would make his bike backfire (sounded like it) and spit a blue flame out the muffler. He's claiming its a nitrous kit, but theres no bottle, no tubing, etc. What would do this? He also tried telling me it was a nitrous additive to his fuel

.

EDIT: heres a picture of the switch he uses (kinda hard to see)

More than likely it was something like a spark plug at the tail pipe that was igniting the exhaust fumes. If it WAS nitrous, there would be an obvious increase in speed when he hit that little switch.

Umm exhaust gasses DO NOT ignite.

heres a better question:

WHY?!? why in teh hell would you need NITROUS on a sport bike? if he thinks his R6 is slow for some odd reason, go R1 or 'BUSA.

They do if you run rich enough.

Pour a cup of gas in your muffler and tell me that again. :D

he could have an injector into the tailpipe to ignite the gas, or have the mixture really rich, which can cause the exahust to be flammable

After it's burnt up normal fuel that you get at regular gas stations will not ignite.

If he's running rich enough it will.

He could also have an additional injector in the exhaust.

Even unmodded cars running stock fuel will burn exhaust. Remember all that FUD the enviromonkeys spread about "uncombusted hydrocarbons" and "inefficient engines dumping fuel into the atmosphere"?

Yeah. Put 'em to good use. :D

that's assuming all the gas is burnt up in the engine... like everyone said... if your'e running rich enough, your exhaust gases may be flammable... i get flames sometimes, no injector or plug in my exhaust... just really high exhaust temps, and a little pop and i get a little flame....

i actually turned on my car without the headers on once... my friends were standing back, they said that when i blipped the throttle, a little fireball spat out... i wanted to experiment, but i was like, i might torch some stuff under my car... :)

They also sorta look like squids after they go *splat* on the road. :D

What it probably is is an engine kill switch, and flicking it for a short period (then returning it) kills the spark and loads up the exhaust with unburned fuel. When a nice hot pulse comes along, it ignites the mix causing it to flare up.

If he really does nitrous, and is getting that flame, something is fscked up. I suspect he is just using the ignitor trick mentioned above. Nitrous gas additive? To quote you

Hey, people thought Don Prudhomme ran nitrous in his fuel lines when in fact he just switched to a new type of fuel pump.

He didnt do it while he was riding, he just had it in neutral, would rev up, then flip that switch, and a flame would shoot out his exhaust

Your friend is obviously the coolest guy ever.

Just worship him as he desires.
