Came back home from work yesterday and the whole apt. smelled like crap. Went around sniffing and figured out it is the kitchen floor drain. Opened the cap and there's some smell coming out of it.

There was water inside so it isn't dried out or anything but I put in a pot of hot water through the kitchen sink (leads to the floor drain) but the smell hasn't gone.

What should I do?

Baking soda first, wait a bit, then pour in some vinegar. After it's done foaming, rinse down with lots of hot water.

This will be straight through the floor drain, right?

edit - and how much vinegar?

Drain cleaner, usually a very strong basic solution. This should clean the drain and dislodge whatever is rotting in there...

The drain probably has a P-trap on it that has dried out. Just pour some water down it and you'll be good. Do this every couple of months and you won't have to worry about it anymore.

all of these are good ideas

I'd do the baking soda and vinegar first and then bleach it out.... then drain-o it and bleach it again if you're still having problems....

is plunging an option?

I've done it down my kitchen sink to get the drains to smell better, and I don't have a flood drain (upper flat).

I used 1/4c baking soda and 1c vinegar. Let it foam and stuff for ~ 5-10 minutes and then rinse.

If it's an apartment, call building maintenance. Have them resolve the issue for you.
