My first week as a sys admin and I had to take ALL of the servers offline...

Yep, I had to take 5 linux servers and 6 NT/2000 servers offline and shut them down because of a power outage today. They were running off of their UPS units, but eventually had to take them down. The main sys admin is on vacaction and I was by myself and scared $hitless.... After the power came back on, I rebooted em all and had to go one by one restarting DNS servers, cronjobs, web servers, etc.

What a first week.... :)

I hope none of those are singe IDE disk 'servers', if you want to call them servers with single drives ;)

Our old mail server at work was like that, it would go down because of the drive every week or so.

Running fsck on /dev/hda4 time and time again through a friggin' serial console, sitting there.. waiting for almost 20-30 minutes.. isn't much fun.. :disgust:

The outage hit us out here in North Pole, too. Five seconds after I heard the first thunderclap. Lightning must have hit something vital at GVEA.

Geekish Thoughts, Actually we have Compaq and Dell PowerEdge servers with rackmount PowerEdge web server. A few have redundant power supplies and this is an IDE free zone! 15,000rpm Cheetah drives all the way! :D

My first week at work, I had to deal with 3 hacked Linux boxes (our external DNS, internal DNS, and webserver). And guess what? I am not even the Sys admin.. apparently, the guy quitted a couple of weeks before. I told them I know enough about Linux OS'es to fix what the hackers have done. Stupid move.. now they have me do sys admin too.

you could look into having a generator or something installed... my university has one that can power all their servers for 2 weeks :)
