CPU : Opteron 165 Dual Core
Mobo: ASUS K8N-LR
Ram: Corsair ValueSelect 1GB DDR

SATA II Controller: 3Ware AMCC 9550SX 8 Port
SCSI Controller: LSI Logic 21320

Storage:
4 X 250GB Seagate 7200.10 16MB Cache
1 X 147GB Maxtor Atlas IV 10K

Now i am thinking of what OS i should put in, i heard linux samba gives the best file serving performance.

Originally i was going to use a very low end CPU for this server, like a sempron or something until my friend has a spare opteron to give me.

What else can i do with the powerful dual core in order to maximizes is usage since a file server isn't very taxing to the system.

I DO NOT want to fold with the server because it will jack up my power bill!

you should have just gotten 1 750gb that uses less power than the 4 250 if you're worry about power issues.. or 2 in raid 1.

if you're worry about power bill, dont do anything else.. if you dont care, fold away or use it to rip dvd..

You're contradicting yourself.

You want to:
A) Maximize your CPU usage
but don't want to
B) pay for the power bill to maximize your CPU usage.

Either you're running your CPU full tilt or you're not. If you are, the power company isn't going to charge you more because it's F@H...
