My first TV Tuner [Winfast DV2000] experience: not so good

Hi everyone,

I've installed my very first TV Tuner card a few days ago, and after countless attempts at trying to get it to work properly, I am on the verge of giving up. The card I purchased is a Leadtek WinFast DV2000.

My problem:

I can either get a picture or sound, but not both. There is more to it, and I will explain it in better detail.
When I first installed the card and the drivers, I was able to get a picture, but no sound. At the time, I only had generic audio drivers installed via Windows Update, and I figured that installing the proper drivers would fix the problem. Indeed it did, but then I found out that I was no longer getting a picture. All I got was a completely black screen, which worried me - even with no signal, it is supposed to show a plain blue screen like many TVs do. Uninstalling my audio drivers however, did not restore the picture. Completely removing and reinstalling the card drivers did, but installing my audio drivers would kill it again. I have found this problem to be reproducible, even after reformats. I have tried various other things, such as installing the audio drivers before the card drivers, trying different versions of the drivers, updating Windows, disabling/enabling devices, etc. Tweaking settings in Leadtek's "Winfast PVR2" TV Tuner program did not help in any way whatsoever. On a few miraculous occasions, I did manage to get both the picture and sound working, but the dreaded black screen of death returned after a reboot.
So, what gives? Could my card drivers and sound drivers somehow be conflicting with each other? Or is Leadtek's program just buggy? I honestly cannot figure it out.

Also, is this card compatible with Windows Media Center? When I tried the "Set up TV" option, it tells me that it cannot detect a TV tuner card. It isn't much of a concern to me if this card is unsupported (I don't really use Media Center), but I do want the cursed thing working correctly with its default program!

Any help in resolving this matter would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Yeah the black screen sounds like your TV tuner drivers knock out your basic video drivers and that's why reinstalling them worked. Had that happen myself a few years back with an All-In-Wonder. The audio driver sounds suspect since your getting it off Windows update. I get driver suggested on Windows update that go back to 2004 and wouldn't dare put them in since nothing on my computer even dates latter than late 2006. The drivers for these things are very fussy. I must have spent 3 weeks of my life on the AIW.

The drivers from Windows Update give me basic audio functionality which I am happy with for the most part. I am forced to install the proper audio drivers because I otherwise get no sound from the TV Tuner program, but by doing so, I completely lose my picture. ;( Other video-related stuff works fine (movies, games, etc.), so I am guessing the problem just exists between the TV Tuner card and the sound drivers. It's just a shame that I cannot narrow it down any further.
