My first Sushi Experience.

Well, I just had(OK, YESTERDAY) my first experience wolfing dow...err..eating sushi.

I was at Jewel, and believe it or not, they had some kind of "Sushi bar" thing there which consisted of a huge sign and a cooler thing with a few packages of Sushi. I had just walked up to it when some young lady walked up to it too who was pretty and had a nice figure, but her skin looked like a dirty rag pulled out of a sewer pipe.(IE, dark brown, all shriveled and such and also very dry...product of probably smoking and way too much time under the tanning bed.) and was looking at the trays.
I asked her to explain this stuff to me what what was what, if she knew. She explained to me what was what, and they had things like the Combo tray with: a piece of cooked shrimp, some calif. rolls with crab meat, a slice of raw tuna, and some extra's like pickled ginger, soy sauce and a ball of wasabi; a tray of things called "salad rolls" with what looked like lettuce and a bunch of meats mixed together in mayo or something of the sort, and other trays as well.
I decided to get the combo tray because I wanted to try a bit of everything.

So, I grab a $1.50 container of Wasabi, grab some chopsticks, and peel out of there.

The first thing I ate was the shrimp. It was...tough. Not too exciting, of course, as I eat cooked shrimp all the time.

Then I had a roll. I was like "WTF?!". THey had screwed up the rice BAD. It was like mega strong...too much vinager, suger, or SOMETHING. It TOTALLY overpowered the whole roll. They all were like this.

So, after eating my sushimi, I decided to try the REAL sushi - the slab of tuna. It looked good...I ripped off half of it and slapped it into my waiting pie-hole...I was pleasantly suprised. I was like, "Damn...this stuff is COOL!" so I ate the rest of it, loving it. I was like, "MORE! MORE!!!" and looked down at the rolls sadly. THen I saw the pickled ginger. I like ginger and all, very good for you...settles your stomach(that's probably why they eat it with sushi).

I tried it, and it was damn good. So I slapped some on a roll...YUMMMMMMMMMMM!!! Me likey!

So, on the way home(I live an hour away from this place) i see this place that says "Bistro Numa" or something to that effect. I went in, and I see a BEAUTIFUL place...VERY clean, you see them making the food RIGHT in front of you, and everyone is very nice..they all said "Hello!" and the one guy showed me around. I will have to go back there...

What was your first time eating sushi? GOod? Bad?

I have Sushi each week, I think Crab is the best of all. My GF hates it, but she'll go along with me every once in a while. Negitoro Maki and Tekka Maki also get good merit. Here's a sushi site with pics for dishes.

my first real time with sushi was in may 1999, the last night of the E3 show that year... i went to some japanese restaurant in LA's little tokyo with a bunch of random gaming types after the show. i wanted to just dive in so i got a big combo deal with like 20 pieces of nigiri of all types... everything from tuna and salmon to squid to two kinds of roe. i loved it all until i got to the roe - that was a challenge, and i still don't care for it very much. that and uni are the only things i really can't stomach (conjures up too many unpleasant sea images i think).

i've been to some great sushi places in bigger areas... my favorites:

kitaro in san francisco (it's on geary)
niwano hana in DC (volcano rolls!)
sushi nozawa outside LA (actually rated by somebody as LA's number one restaurant. run by a really old, really steely looking japanese guy who's ultra traditional - there's a rumor that he once threw someone out when they asked for a california roll. amazing, really traditional food, and it better be at $60 a meal.)

i hated sushi the first time i had it...i was like " what the hell is this slimy crap!"
but now i love it....its expensive yes, but if you travel around your area you start to know where the value is at..... my favorite is salmon skin and california roll....if those arent authentic sushi i apologize, i just eat the stuff, im not a historian.

the first ti e i ate sushi was two years back when i went out witha group girls to eat. since then i've been addicted to japanese food.

BTW, a great sushi joints at SF is KATARO @ Geary right across from crappy ATMAN computer. This is my sushi place, for teriyaki, TANI's Kitchen @ Westlake Shopping Center @ Daly City. BEST Teriyaki beef i EVER ate! Small joint though. 12 seats i believe.

Anybody has suggestions or recommendation?!

LOL 2 people mention Kitaro's on Geary in SF, that place rules!!! It's just a few blocks from my house. $1.95 for 6 piece roll or 4 pieces of the more expensive stuff. Can't beat those prices for pretty good sushi. :)

Havn't been there in ages though since I am in school. :(

Ahhhh... sushi. Love the stuff. Unagi rules! Toro (fatty tuna), amaebi (sweet shrimp), and my favorite spider roll. There's a place in Folsom that I go to when I visit my sister there (no she's no on death row, well maybe kinda like death row Intel). They have these massive rolls. One's called the Japanese Burrito! It weighs about a pound and has everything you can imagine in it. It's got shrimp tempura, soft shell crab, unagi, avocado, some sauces, tuna, salmon, etc. Thing will run you about $20. But you eat one and your like full.... well not exactly, cuz if you're there, you HAVE to do some sake shots. Hehehe, it's like a double/triple shot of sake with quail egg, scallop, hot sauce, and some other stuff. Man! I gotta head up there again soon. The place is called Mikuni's if you ever are out there. They have a list of about 100 different rolls that they can make. :D

/me hungry. too late for sushi. maybe tomorrow in Little Tokyo

The freshest sushi (at least in Japan) comes form the "kaiten" sushi bars, it's this assembly-line/conveyor style bar, you have this in CA? It's 100% fresh naturally, because of the 5 second turn-over. They put it on, and it's gone. The magic of sushi is freshness, 5 minutes on the tray and the flavor is gone. taste in Japan is also slightly different from other countries, because they use a different, Japan-only rice.

(Sorry for the bump! :D)

<< btw, incase u don't know this already...wasabi doesn't really kill germs....the white raddish strings....will. >>

Wasabi, to my knowledge, is there for FLAVOR. The ginger, however, calms your stomach as I said...so you eat ginger with it and it should help quite nicely.

<< and i still don't care for it very much. that and uni are the only things i really can't stomach (conjures up too many unpleasant sea images i think).
>>

Uni? Isn't that sea urchin?

<< u 8 american sushi.....not really sushi cept for the tuna >>

Didn't I say that?

"American sushi" = sushime [SOO-SHEE-MEE]...IE, cooked fish. :)

<< sushi = crap = doesn't appeal to Ross = crap = see it's a never ending cycle >>

Have you ever had sushi?

A short while back, if you asked me if I had ever had sushi, I would have almost puked and screamed the negative in your face. I was feeling peticularly adventurous yesterday, so that is the only reason I had it! :D

<< sushi = crap

:D >>

no sushi = fish
poop = crap

actually....sushi = crap here's why...

sushi = food

food ultimately becomes poop....

since poop = crap...

therefore

Sushi = crap : Sushi = food = poop = crap :D

ugh, I know lots of people like it, so it can't be that bad or anything. But, I could never eat sushi. Maybe after they clean it up for you and make it look less like a fish it's all good, but I've been fishing since I can remember and can't make the mental jump from bait to dinner.
