My first Road bike!

I went to the LBS with the intent of buying a Trek 1000 , Lemond Etape, or a Bianchi Brava.

After getting sized and fitted the LBS brought out a Trek 1200 with much better components and a great price @ 800$ vs the price on the web of 880$.

And it was a brand new bike never ridden.

Now invest in a good bike lock and a big-ass gun to blow away the nads of the thief who tries to steal it

Get rid of the reflectors 😉 😛

yeah...the reflectors makes the bike look weak.

🙂

oh yeah...how tall are you and what sized did you end up getting? that bike looks kinda small.

congrats on your 1st road bike!

I'd been dreaming of having one also, but I'm not ready to spend that much dough on a bike yet. Can somebody recommend a good one at maybe half that price?

It could be done, but I would definitely recommend spending the extra on a bike like that.

I was in the same situation, so I checked out craigslist and got a nice classic Peugeot (like this one) for $100CAD. The guy I got it from runs a bicycle recyling shop, so that's why it was so cheap, but I did get new tires, brake pads and I am very very happy with it.

Of course, its no trek or bianchi (main thing is that its noticably heavier, 25lbs I am guessing), but for that price its great and much better than mountain bikes (on the road of course...).

There are actualy quite a few of these out there, so I suggest checking out yoru local craigslist and yard sales.

hehe...from 1500 to 5000? what a difference....

i couldn't afford more than 600, so opted for Giant OCR3 ....all sora components... i know sora sucks...!!

Why on earth would you want to get rid of reflectors on a road bike?

I'd add more reflectors, along with a blinking LED on the back and bright white LEDs on the front.

Getting hit by a car is no fun. Trust me.

Reflectors on the wheels don't really add much to visibility on a bike and if you don't ride at night then what's the point?

Word. Unless you're racing or care about what others think ("reflectors are teh suck!"), keep 'em. I think mine are still on after 6+ years.

You can get a really small but bright red blinker that straps easily to your seatpost. I leave it attached all the time and flip it on if the weather gets nasty or daylight fades.

Nice purchase, OP! Now go get some real pedals!

Wheel reflectors add MUCH side visibility to a bike. They are the most noticeable reflectors on a bike when seen from the side because they are moving and flashing.

Wheel reflectors are not some after thought. They were carefully studied for visibility and found to be most effective.

And if you're serious about riding, you're gonna be out in the dark once in a while.

Look, if it was an off road bike I'd agree. But a road bike needs all the help it can get.

Looks like you might want to flip that stem - this appears to be a hair on the small side if that's where you normally ride in terms of saddle height, and you'll probably be comfier with a higher bar.

Get some clipless ASAP!!!

I can't seriously argue that reflectors are a bad thing from a safety standpoint, but they definitely cost you style points . . . I haven't bought a production bike in a long time, but I have immediately ripped the reflectors off of every bike I've had since I was a teenager.

This is pretty much what I did as well, and again, my only complaint is weight. I have probably a 15-20 year old Gardin bike with new rims and tires; it rides smooth, it's much faster than ANY mountain bike on the road, and it didn't break the bank. If I were going to race I would want something lighter of course.
