My first real bootleg recording of stuff I'd collected......

So, now that I've got my uber-collection, I noticed I'm not up to speed on a couple things.........

#1.) Bootlegs are definitely a little raw. (recording's excellent, but definitely not edited for content)

#2.) FLAC ---- Free Lossless Audio Codec (Man, I am not familiar)

So, I researched the codec and found something to d/l for Nero apparently nothing understands it normally. Well, I haven't tried to burn a cd of my collection yet, but am I gonna need to put the codec "INTO" Nero???

Also........I can't click on the files and have them play, but if I open them in WMP9 (yup, 9, old-school), it's playing the files individually just fine.

????? Any help appreciated in getting me up to speed.

TIA!!

I would avoid Nero & FLAC, even with the appropriate plug-ins Nero does a notoriously poor job with FLAC. CD's burned from FLAC source are frequently full of pops (that are not there in the FLAC).

File associations? You should really check out a better player, have you tried Foobar2K?

Thanks Viper!

Ya, I saw that Googling turned up a lot of Foobar/FLAC associations.

Can I burn w/ Foobar?? (foobar2K?)

Just split the decode and burn into two separate stages, it's a pain in the ass but at least your discs won't be crap.

Oh and the link for foobar:

To be honest if using Nero I would just use m4a (mp4 audio) built into Nero. Even the lowest setting kicks ass and the highest setting is transparent.

Thanks!

I haven't downloaded Foobar yet, but I did d/l the Nero plug in for FLAC and tried my Nero (Express 6) w/o the codec in the Common/Ahead/PlugIns and it failed. Once I **did** put the codec into the folder...........IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!!

The burn played in my daugher's bare bones CD player, so it must've converted the files to .WAV (????) But.....it definitely played & quite clearly. (Shows approx 50mb for 8 songs, so definitely not compressed much, if at all from FLAC)

I'd definitely have to learn to *split* the decode (two stage??) as I don't even know what that means, but I'm quite pleased as-is.

I think I'll still d/l Foobar though (seems like free-codecs.com has 9.5.1beta out now) just so I know I'll be able to play more files.

I use winamp to decode FLAC files to wav. and itunes to encode them into mp3s. Winamp needs a plugin to handle FLAC files, but I find the speed and quality to be acceptable.
