i got my linksys 5 port ethernet switch(tiny lil fella) a day ago from onvia.ca(damn they're fast at shipping!) and today just got the other cat5 i needed. i just got my two computers sharing my dsl! woo! lol. anyways, now i have to see if i can get them working in a lan of half life..

lol, yeah. it cam in this big box, so i opened it and had some fun with the packing peanuts before finding the next box. i open that box, and theres a little white box(power supply) and a bubble wrapped object. i start thinking "where the hell is this thing?" and i open the bubble wrap and out pops my lil switch cute thing, lol

HL should be easy to get running, though I'd probably hardcode the IPs of your two machines to ensure they never change. Other than that, just install TCP/IP & IPX/SPX on each one, & you should be good to go.

Here's what I'd do, then:

1) Turn off DHCP server in your Linksys. You don't need it, & with only two computers you might as well just hardcode them anyway.

2) Set your Linksys's LAN address to 192.168.1.1, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

3) Set computer #1 to an IP address of 192.168.1.2, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Also, go to the default gateway tab & configure a default gateway of 192.168.1.1. Go to the DNS tab, & hardcode your ISPs DNS servers.

4) Set computer #1 to an IP address of 192.168.1.3, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Also, go to the default gateway tab & configure a default gateway of 192.168.1.1. Go to the DNS tab, & hardcode your ISPs DNS servers.

5) Reboot both machines & call it good.

It should have a block of jumpers inside, you'll need to crack it open. You'll probably also need a small soldering iron...

Just kidding.

The Linksys has an easy to use web interface. Go take a look at what IP address your system currently has (Start/Run/winipcfg, choose your NIC off the dropdown list), change the last number to a "1", & copy the entire IP into your web browser. More than likely that'll open up the web interface.

the dsl modem(external) supports multiple ip's (maybe it has a built in router?) i this is my setup:

Viperoni's right, I assumed you were using the linksys ADSL router... What DSL router are you using? That's what's running your DHCP, then. The switch is almost certainly umanageable. The DSL router should have options to turn off DHCP, though. If it's a Cisco 675, I can certainly help you with that.

You'll have to add File & Printer Sharing to your network stack, & then share a folder (Or your entire hard drive, for that matter).

If you're running 95/98/98SE/ME don't forget to set a password for your drive(s) that you've shared. If you're on Win2000 it's a little bit better about things like that [security].
