Have you concidered Plasma screens? I own a Hitachi 42" HDT79 model and it's great. This past black friday you could've had a very nice panny 42" plasma for 1k. It's concidered one of the best in picture quality and was well worth the price. The way plasma prices have been plummeting you at least owe it to yourself to check them out. LCD tvs are becoming really great, but unless you get a $2500 sony or some other high end LCD TV from JVC, in my opinion it won't match plasma picture quality. The downside to plasma is the glare off the screen since it's made of glass, LCDs dont' have that problem.

Right now a $600 budget would get you a 32" of decent quality fairly easily. Every now and again you'll find a 37" for close to that, but too many of those aren't worth buying (low quality).

There's a couple of other things you could do. You could go with a lower size but higher quality (say a 24" LCD monitor), or maybe go for a projector where you will lose some pixels (quite a few but 360 still looks great even at 480p) but get a much larger screen.

Personally, I say wait as long as you possibly can. LCD prices are falling (and should continue to do so) and quality is rising, so you should be able to afford a larger higher quality display for your money.

Of course at some point you have to say now is the time and just get the best you can for your budget at that time, which there's nothing wrong with. You can always get something nicer later on and enjoy what you could get for now. If now is that time, then I say either go a decent 32", look around and see if there isn't a deal on a 37", or if possible stretch the budget and go for something that you should be very happy with for some time (such as the Westinghouse 37" 1080p LCD that goes for about $1000).

If I could wait I would definitely wait till next black friday. BB was selling their 42" westies for 1k along with 42" panny plasmas. It'll only get cheaper this year.

Instead of settling for 32", I say wait just a little longer as prices drop and get the 37" you want, otherwise you'll always wish you had. In the mean time, you can save up some more money (and do research). I've looked at 32" and 37" for awhile, and from everything I've seen, even for a 32", $600 will get a TV that's lacking some things and/or has some minor annoyances (or worse).

The guys from BB told me to buy just SONY, because beside of HDD chanels you
gona still watch regular ones and SONY does bouth of them.
Buying cheaper brand you'll have SO-SO HD and BAD regular chanel viewing.
On second place coming SAMSUNG and SHARP, but they have some + and - too.
That's my 2 Cents.

No offense but they're just trying to get you to spend the most (c'mon your listening to a Best Buy employee who are required to regurgitate the same BS that they're fed). SD content on most LCDs will not look good regardless of brand. Fixed pixel displays don't do well with non-native content. It might be true that the more expensive sets will do a better job of scaling it, but its still not going to look great and you're going to be paying a lot more money.

You can get both HD and SD channels on any LCD that features an ATSC and NTSC tuner (a lot of them do). Preferrably if you have cable then you'd want it to also feature QAM (unencrypted digital which will give you HD through your cable connection).

how do you feel about the olevia line?

looks like its a great price, but it is RECERTIFIED.

is that still ok?

also if i decided to get on off air HDTV antenna from my local radioshack , could i watch local channels in HDTV?

any input is much appreciated.

Olevia is ok, most of theirs are decent, but some are very poor quality. I personally wouldn't go for a recertified one, especially from Newegg (horrible return policy and I believe that on a display that big that once you sign for it they will no longer handle it at all you'll have to deal directly with the company). There's a chance you'll get a good deal, but personally I think there's too much risk.

Yikes, that budget is way too low for a 37". Probably ok for a 32" Westinghouse, but unless you want to go with Insignia, Prima and other 'mad budget' screens, just keep saving.

If you've never had a HDTV, or understand the "shortcomings" of an inexpensive unit, you'll be very pleased with the Westinghouse 32" or 37" from BB. The Westy LTV-32W6 is my 3rd HDTV (along with a Sony 50" GWIII and a Polaroid 26") and I really like it as the bedroom TV. It's perfect for sports, Heroes, and DVDs and very affordable. I've hooked it up to my media center PC and it works perfectly with no over/underscan issues. I definitely prefer its picture to Olevia and the other inexpensive brands.

Westys show the "full HD signal" so you'll sometimes see a weird line on the left of the screen (typically NBC) or the top of the screen (HBO 4:3 content). My Sony actually zooms the image slightly so that stuff is not shown, but its actually in the signal and not a defect in the TV. If you get it home and don't care for it, you can always take it back (in 30 days) and upgrade. Still, I think a Westinghouse is a great "starter" HDTV or a bedroom/extra TV when you don't want to drop a bundle but want to have widescreen/HD capability.
