I've just gotten BeOS Pro 5 installed, networked, and running smoothly. All of that was rather easy. And after finding BeAIM, I have a way to communicate with my friends. So far I am loving this, short of the rather poor web browser, but I'm sure I can find a better one. I love how many useful apps come with it, what other OS comes with a cd burning program?

For your browser try using Opera..

I love to use BeOS for all the different multimedia advantages it has.. And the instant messenger will soon be compatible with Microsoft Messenger..

I tried BEOS a while ago and was very impressed with how easy and fast it installed. Opera is a pretty decent web browser, especially the new 5.0, but it's not available for BEOS yet :(

I've used both BeOS Personal and Pro, and liked both very much. I liked how it boots up in literally 5-6 seconds. It's a very nice OS, it's kinda like a mac on crack with nice unix features such as a terminal window. Unfortunately, it looks like Be is dumping BeOS to work on that stupid BeIA:(

If only they'd release the source code it would probably keep a small but loyal following. Linux will be around until NOBODY likes it anymore because all the code is available. It can't go under just because a company gives up on it. That's good. (does have it's disadvantages though. A lot of the open source software available is utter crap, but over time linux app support is getting better, more professional, and capable apps are becoming available for the desktop market). I'm just waiting for a decent media player equivalent to play all these final fantasy vid clips of mine. XMMS can do it but I hate having the video window seperate from the app window. Oh well. Guess I'll just have to wait (or code my own . . . :))

The "BeOS Bible"? Nope. Learned mostly by playing around with it. I now use beOS the same, if not more, than Windows2K.. Can't wait for this spring when Neverwinters Nights is released for it..

Jonny - I downloaded BeOS from download.com which says,

Description
Previously known only in small circles as the "Media OS," BeOS 5 Personal Edition is now available as a free download. Thanks to new innovative technology from Be, you can download BeOS 5 Personal Edition via a Web browser and store it as a file within Windows. No repartitioning is necessary, and launching BeOS 5 is as simple as double-clicking an icon on your desktop. This update incorporates the latest changes that will be released in the upcoming BeOS 5.0.1 patch, as well as some important licensing changes.

To find out what's new in BeOS 5, go to the Latest Release Features page. You can also check the BeOS Ready List for information about what hardware is supported.
